Paul Singer (economist)
Paul Israel Singer (24 March 1932 – 16 April 2018) was an Austrian-born Brazilian economist and scholar. Early life Paul Singer was born into a family of small Jewish merchants based in , a working-class suburb of Vienna. In 1938, after the German annexation of Austria, and the beginning of persecution of the Jews, the family decided to emigrate. In 1940, they settled in São Paulo Brazil where they already had some relatives. In 1948 he joined the Dror kibbutz movement (current Habonim Dror). In 1951 Singer graduated in electrotechnology at Getúlio Vargas Technical School in São Paulo, practicing his profession between 1952 and 1956. During this period, Singer joined the Metalworkers' Union of São Paulo. As a metalworker, he led a 300,000 workers' strike, which paralyzed the industry of São Paulo for more than a month in 1953. Florestan Fernandes
Florestan Fernandes (22 July 1920 – 10 August 1995) was a Brazilian sociologist and politician. He was also elected federal deputy twice. Life and career Fernandes came from a poor family with his mother being a "washerwoman". In youth he took a series of odd jobs and had an erratic education until he attended the University of Sau Paulo in 1941. In 1945 he graduated and by 1964 was a full professor in sociology. In that same year he won the Prêmio Jabuti. In 1969 he fled to Canada for political reasons and began to teach at the University of Toronto. In 1986 he returned to Brazil and became involved in the Partido dos Trabalhadores. In his treatment of Marxism, he is known for presenting hybrid views that diverged from orthodox theory and from conventional leftist practical concessions. Luiza Erundina
Luiza Erundina de Sousa (; November 30, 1934) is a Brazilian politician, born in Uiraúna, a small city in the interior of the Brazilian state of Paraíba. Political history From 1980 to 1997 she was affiliated with the PT party (Workers’ Party). In 1997 she changed to the PSB party. Mário Pedrosa
Mário Xavier de Andrade Pedrosa (25 April 1900 – 5 November 1981) was a Brazilian art and literary critic, journalist and political activist. Plínio Soares de Arruda Sampaio (26 July 1930 – 8 July 2014) was a Brazilian intellectual and political activist, who was affiliated with the Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL).
