Paul Roberts (American Footballer)
Paul Roberts (born 20 December 1963, Birmingham, United Kingdom) is a former British American football defensive back who played for the Birmingham Bulls, Redditch Arrows and also internationally for the GB Lions. Roberts is regarded by the Britball community as one of the best defensive backs to play the game in Britain. Playing career Roberts joined the Bulls in 1985. In 1988, Roberts picked off then- Leicester Falcons quarterback Sean Payton to secure a 19-14 win. In April of that year, Roberts, along with Joe St. Louis of the London Ravens were to be flown to Chicago for trials with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers. It was this year that Roberts set a record of 8 turnovers, 5 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries, that would stand for 27 years. The Great Britain national American football team, known as the GB Lions represents the UK in international gridiron. It is controlled by the British American Football Association. Men's Senior Team History The Men's Senior GB Lions played their first game against France in 1985 at Stompond Lane. 2,000 attendees watched GB claim a 7–0 win thanks to a Victor Ebubedike touchdown. In 1986 and 1987, the Lions defeated the Netherlands and France over two legs each to qualify for the 1987 European Championship. 2015 Birmingham Bulls Season
The 2015 Birmingham Bulls season was the team's 32nd season in competitive British American Football. It was also the first season under rookie Head Coach Mark Pagett and Chairman Richard Penwright, whilst Rob Amor returned for a fifth year as Club Secretary. The Bulls entered the 2015 season in the second tier following a league restructure, and were considered by some to be favourites for post-season success and immediate promotion back to the top tier. Alexander Stadium is a track and field athletics stadium in Perry Park, Birmingham, England. It hosted the athletics and opening/closing ceremonies of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. American Football In The Netherlands
American football in the Netherlands has been on the map both nationally and internationally since the 1980s. However, it took almost 40 years before the first American Football game played in the Netherlands was followed up. In 1946 two American University teams played an exhibition game in the Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam). Not until 1980 did the following step appear, when René Koningsferander issued a request on the TV sports programme 'Sprekershoek' for people who were interested in the sport. Koningferander had been introduced to the sport by his gymnastics teacher Guus Annokkee who would go on to be the founder and inaugural chairman of the NAFF (Nederlandse American Football Federatie).
