Paul Q. Kolderie
Paul Q. Kolderie is an American record producer, engineer, and mixer. He has worked with Pixies, Radiohead, Orangutang, Hole, Dinosaur Jr., Juliana Hatfield, Wax, Warren Zevon, Uncle Tupelo, Throwing Muses, Morphine, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Abandoned Pools, the Go-Go's, and Mike Gordon of Phish. He usually works with production partner Sean Slade. Kolderie and Slade were friends from Yale University, where they played in bands together. They also became members of Sex Execs, a Boston-based new wave music band of the early 1980s. The duo had their formative experience as producers while they were in Sex Execs. Most of the group lived in a house in Dorchester, Boston that was wired up as a primitive studio. Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a category of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Phish
Phish is an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the lead vocalist. The band was formed by Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who were joined by McConnell in 1985. Holdsworth departed the band in 1986, and the lineup has remained stable since. Joe Harvard
Joseph Incagnoli (1959–2019), better known as Joe Harvard, was an American musician, record producer, and writer, who played a key role in developing the alternative rock scene in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1980s. He founded Fort Apache Studios, along with Sean Slade, Paul Q. Kolderie, and Jim Fitting. Joseph Alia Incagnoli, Jr. grew up in the Jeffries Point neighborhood of East Boston. He earned a scholarship to Harvard University, which became the source of his alias while working in a Cambridge record store. Varying accounts from musicians Claudia Gonson and Rich Gilbert are also visible in a history of The Pixies. Jim Fitting
Jim Fitting is an American harmonica player based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is known for his work with Treat Her Right, The The, and Session Americana. His credits include guest performances on various other artists' albums and live gigs. Background Fitting was born in California and grew up in San Francisco. He began playing harmonica at an early age with his brother Tom on guitar. In the 1970s, he went to Yale University. Fort Apache Studios
Fort Apache Studios is a New England recording studio focusing on alternative rock sessions produced there since 1986. History The studio was initially built by a collective begun in 1985 by musician/producer Joe Harvard and members of a band called Sex Execs: engineers Paul Q. Kolderie, Sean Slade, and Jim Fitting. Its first location was 169 Norfolk Avenue, a warehouse in the Roxbury, Massachusetts, Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. As Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom noted, it was the height of the crack epidemic, and Roxbury was a dangerous place. The Cars
The Cars were an American rock band formed in Boston in 1976. Emerging from the new wave scene in the late 1970s, they consisted of Ric Ocasek ( rhythm guitar), Benjamin Orr (bass guitar), Elliot Easton (lead guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards), and David Robinson ( drums). Ocasek and Orr shared lead vocals, and Ocasek was the band's principal songwriter and leader. Syncro Sound
Syncro Sound was a recording studio in Boston, Massachusetts, active from 1981 through 1986. It was owned by The Cars, who recorded their fourth album, ''Shake It Up'', there. Various other musicians, both nationally known and from the local scene, also had albums produced at Syncro. The studio was located on Newbury Street in the posh Back Bay neighborhood. The space was previously occupied by Intermedia Sound, where Aerosmith and Jonathan Edwards both recorded their first albums. In 1982, the ''Washington Post'' described the refurbished brick row house, along with the fresh technology and décor inside -- "everywhere is the smell of newness." Dana Colley
Dana Colley (born October 17, 1961) is an American musician, best known as the baritone and tenor saxophonist in the alternative rock band Morphine. Early life Colley was born in Portland, Maine, but he was raised in Hanson, Massachusetts, where he took up the clarinet in the 4th grade, switching to tenor sax in 7th. He picked up the baritone sax in 1984. New Wave Music
