Paul McHugh (cyclist)
Paul McHugh (born 12 July 1967, Darwen) is a former English track sprint cyclist, 14 times British track champion, and winner of 2 World Series. On retiring from the sport in 1995, McHugh began a career directing and producing Visual Effects. After serving 7 years as Animation Director in the games industry at Acclaim, Sony Psynosis and Rage Software, he launched his own VFX company, Carbon Digital. Sprint cyclist From an early age, he competed at international level for his country, winning 14 British titles in just 10 years. He remains the only track cyclist to have won both the Junior and Senior National Sprint title in the same year, (1984), achieved at just 17 years of age. He rode for clubs including: Kirkby Cycling Club, Mersey Road Club and Manchester Wheelers, and began riding for the British team in 1984. Paul was talent spotted by Eddie Soens when he was just 15. British National Track Championships
The British National Track Championships are held annually and organised by British Cycling (formerly the British Cycling Federation). The main events are various track cycling disciplines for elite athletes to determine the British national champions. However, competitions are also held in age and disability categories. Until 1994 both amateur and professionals could take part in the 'Open' events, in addition to specific events that were restricted to either. The modern era is considered to have started in 1994 eventually replacing the amateur era. In November 1994, British Cycling moved its headquarters to the National Cycling Centre, Manchester, which held been opened earlier in the year by Princess Anne. The 1986 Commonwealth Games ( gd, Geamannan a 'Cho-fhlaitheis 1986) were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, between 24 July and 2 August 1986. They were the second Games to be held in Edinburgh. Thirty two of the eligible fifty nine countries (largely African, Asian and Caribbean states) boycotted the event because of the Thatcher government's policy of keeping Britain's sporting links with apartheid South Africa.
