Paul Erdős Award
The Paul Erdős Award, named after Paul Erdős, is given by the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions for those who "have played a significant role in the development of mathematical challenges at the national or international level and which have been a stimulus for the enrichment of mathematics learning". The awards have been given in two-year periods since 1992. Paul Erdős
Paul Erdős ( hu, Erdős Pál ; 26 March 1913 – 20 September 1996) was a Hungarian mathematician. He was one of the most prolific mathematicians and producers of mathematical conjectures of the 20th century. pursued and proposed problems in discrete mathematics, graph theory, number theory, mathematical analysis, approximation theory, set theory, and probability theory. Much of his work centered around discrete mathematics, cracking many previously unsolved problems in the field. He championed and contributed to Ramsey theory, which studies the conditions in which order necessarily appears. Overall, his work leaned towards solving previously open problems, rather than developing or exploring new areas of mathematics. In its most general sense, the term "world" refers to the totality of entities, to the whole of reality or to everything that is. The nature of the world has been conceptualized differently in different fields. Some conceptions see the world as unique while others talk of a "plurality of worlds". Luis Davidson San Juan
Luis J. Davidson San Juan ( – ) was a Cuban mathematician, professor and Doctor in Mathematics, known for his contributions to the fields of mathematics and pedagogy. He is renowned for receiving the Paul Erdős Award in 1992 by the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, and for being awarded the distinction of Maestro Founder of Mathematics in Ibero-America by the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture. He was the Vice President of the International Mathematical Olympiad Site Committee in 1988. Nikolay Konstantinov
Nikolay Nikolayevich Konstantinov (russian: Николай Николаевич Константинов; 2 January 1932 – 3 July 2021) was a leading Soviet and Russian mathematical educator and organizer of numerous mathematics competitions for high school students. He is best known as the creator of the system of math schools and math classes and as the creator and chief organizer of the Tournament of the Towns. For his work he was awarded the Paul Erdős award in 1992. Biography Konstantinov was born and grew up in Moscow, Soviet Union. He graduated from the Physics Department of the Moscow State University in 1954, and later received a Ph.D. in physics. Tony Gardiner
Tony Gardiner (born 1947) is a British mathematician who until 2012 held the position of Reader in Mathematics and Mathematics Education at the University of Birmingham. He was responsible for the foundation of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust in 1996, one of the UK's largest mathematics enrichment programs, initiating the Intermediate and Junior Mathematical Challenges, creating the Problem Solving Journal for secondary school students and organising numerous masterclasses, summer schools and educational conferences. Gardiner has contributed to many educational articles and internationally circulated educational pamphlets. Alexander Soifer
Alexander Soifer is a Russian-born American mathematician and mathematics author. His works include over 400 articles and 13 books. Soifer obtained his Ph.D. in 1973 and has been a professor of mathematics at the University of Colorado since 1979. He was visiting fellow at Princeton University from 2002 to 2004, and again in 2006–2007. Soifer also teaches courses on art history and European cinema. His publications include 13 books and over 400 articles. Every spring, Soifer, along with other mathematician colleagues, sponsors the Colorado Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Richard Rusczyk ( or ; ; born September 21, 1971) is the founder and chief executive officer of Art of Problem Solving Inc. (as well as the website, which serves as a mathematics forum and place to hold online classes) and a co-author of the Art of Problem Solving textbooks. Rusczyk was a national Mathcounts participant in 1985, and he won the USA Math Olympiad (USAMO) in 1989. He is one of the co-creators of the Mandelbrot Competition, and the director of the USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS). He also founded the San Diego Math Circle. Every month, Rusczyk works on the Mathcounts website to create Mathcounts Minis, where he explains problems and concepts. Carlos Gustavo Moreira
Carlos Gustavo Tamm de Araújo Moreira (born 8 February 1973) is a Brazilian mathematician working on dynamical systems, ergodic theory, number theory and combinatorics. Moreira is currently a researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), where he goes by the nickname "Gugu". He is also a member of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad Commission, a fanatic fan of the Brazilian football team Flamengo and a member of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB). In October 2016, he achieved the mark of 5000 goals scored in his amateur football career. He maintains a record of his goals to show to the incredulous.
