Paul Chan (Macanese Politician)
Paul Chan Wai Chi (; born 4 January 1957) is a Macau politician, who is the President of New Democratic Macau Association and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Macau. He is one of the three pro-democracy lawmakers in Macau. Chan graduated from Yuet Wah College. In 2009, he participated in the legislative election in the candidate list led by Antonio Ng, and won the third seat for the Macau democracy camp. 2009 Macanese Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Macau on 20 September 2009. The official campaign began on 5 September, and several candidates received warnings from the Electoral Affairs Commission for having begun campaign activities beforehand. As in 2005, there are 29 seats, only 12 of which are elected by universal suffrage under the highest averages method. The rest are "elected" by the functional "constituencies" or appointed by the Chief Executive. The pro-democracy lists This year, there are four lists advocating universal suffrage and political reforms. In both 2001 and 2005, the New Democratic Macau Association, also referred as the democrats by local media, received the highest number of votes. Due to the divisors (1,2,4,8,...) employed in the highest averages method, they only managed to win 2 seats on both occasions (they would have achieved 3 seats had the original d'Hondt formula been used instead). Antonio Ng
António Ng Kuok Cheong (; born September 26, 1957) is currently a member in the Macau Legislative Assembly, returned by direct election. He was the founding chairman of the pro-democratic political party New Macau Association. He is also the leader of the political pressure group Union for Democracy Development. Ng has been a major figure in the Macau democracy movement and is one of the three pro-democratic legislators in the Assembly. After his graduation from Yuet Wah College, Macau, Ng obtained his undergraduate degree in economics at Chinese University of Hong Kong. Once an employee in a Chinese bank in the early 1990s, Ng lost the job due to political pressure from Beijing.
