Victorien Sardou
Victorien Sardou ( , ; 5 September 18318 November 1908) was a French dramatist. He is best remembered today for his development, along with Eugène Scribe, of the well-made play. He also wrote several plays that were made into popular 19th-century operas such as ''La Tosca'' (1887) on which Giacomo Puccini's opera ''Tosca'' (1900) is based, and ''Fédora'' (1882) and '' Madame Sans-Gêne'' (1893) that provided the subjects for the lyrical dramas '' Fedora'' (1898) and '' Madame Sans-Gêne'' (1915) by Umberto Giordano. His play ''Gismonda'', from 1894, was also adapted into an opera of the same name by Henry Février. Early years Victorien Sardou was born at 16 rue Beautreillis (), Paris on 5 September 1831. The Sardous were settled at Le Cannet, a village near Cannes, where they owned an estate, planted with olive trees. A night's frost killed all the trees and the family was ruined. ''Patrie!'' is an 1886 French-language opera in five acts by Émile Paladilhe with a libretto by Victorien Sardou and Louis Gallet based on the play by Sardou about a 16th-century revolt of Flemish nobles in Brussels. The opera was Paladilhe's greatest popular success and was one of the last in the style of grand opera to premiere at the Paris Opéra. Performance history The opera was premiered on 16 December 1886 by the Opéra at the Palais Garnier in Paris. The ''mise-en-scène'' was by Pedro Gailhard, and the choreography, by Louis Merante. ''Patrie'' (English: ''Country'') is a 1946 French historical film, historical drama film directed by Louis Daquin and starring Pierre Blanchar, Maria Mauban and Jean Desailly. It was entered into the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. The Lebaudy ''Patrie'' was a semi-rigid airship built for the French army in Moisson, France, by sugar producers Lebaudy Frères. Designed by Henri Julliot, Lebaudy's chief engineer, the ''Patrie'' was completed in November 1906 and handed over to the military the following month. The ''Patrie'' bears the distinction of being the first airship ordered for military service by the French army. In 1907, from her base at Chalais-Meudon near Paris, a successful series of military manoeuvres was conducted with the airship by the military command, which included a visit by France's President of the Council Georges Clemenceau. Following the successful completion of these operations, in November 1907 the ''Patrie'' was transferred under her own power to her operational base at Verdun, near the German border. ''Patrie'' was the second and final member of the of pre-dreadnought battleships of the French Navy built between her keel laying in April 1902 and her commissioning in July 1907. Armed with a main battery of four guns, she was outclassed before even entering service by the revolutionary British battleship , that had been commissioned the previous December and was armed with a battery of ten guns of the same caliber. Though built to an obsolescent design, ''Patrie'' proved to be a workhorse of the French fleet, particularly during World War I. ''La Patrie'' was a Montreal, Quebec daily newspaper founded by Honoré Beaugrand on February 24, 1879. It became a weekly in 1957 and folded in 1978. Its political affiliation was originally Liberal, but Beaugrand officially broke with the party in 1891 and the paper became deprived of its traditional support group. ''La Patrie's'' circulation numbers sagged until Beaugrand, in declining health, sold his newspaper for $50,000 to Joseph-Israël Tarte in 1897. By the turn of the twentieth century Tarte had turned his new property into an increasingly nonpartisan publication with the city's second-largest circulation for a French-language daily newspaper (topped only by '' La Presse'').
