Patrick Van Goethem
Patrick Van Goethem (born 1969) is a Belgian countertenor, known for performing early music. Early life Patrick Van Goethem was born in Aalst, East Flanders, and began his education in the boys choir Schola Cantorum Cantate Domino under direction of Michaël Ghijs. He studied with Marie-Thérèse Maesen and Zeger Vandersteene, and later with Paul Esswood, Julia Hamari and Andreas Scholl. Career Van Goethem has appeared mostly in festivals of early music in Germany, France and the Netherlands. Van Goethem sang Bach's ''Magnificat'' with Gustav Leonhardt and the Netherlands Bach Society at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. With Reinhard Goebel and the Musica Antiqua Köln he sang in a Bach cantata project at the Festival Musica Antiqua Bruges. He appeared in Bach's ''St Matthew Passion'' in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig as part of the Bach Year 2000. (Laud to God in all his kingdoms), , known as the ''Ascension Oratorio'' (), is an oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, marked by him as (Oratorio for the feast of the Ascension of Christ), probably composed in 1735 for the service for Ascension and first performed on 19 May 1735. Bach had composed his ''Christmas Oratorio'', based on the gospels of Luke and Matthew, in 1734. He had composed an ''Easter Oratorio'' already in 1725. The text for the ''Ascension Oratorio'', a compilation of several biblical sources, free poetry and chorales, was presumably written by Picander who had worked on the libretto for the ''Christmas Oratorio''. It follows the story of the Ascension as told in Luke, Mark and the Acts of the Apostles. The oratorio is structured in eleven movements in two parts, taking about half an hour to perform. Peter Kooij (or, internationally Kooy, born 1954, in Soest) is a Dutch bass singer who specializes in baroque music. Biography Kooij started his musical career at 6 years as a choir boy. However he started his musical studies as a violin student. He came back to singing, with tuition from Max van Egmond at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam which led in 1980 to the award of the diploma for solo performance. His international career started in 1981 under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe, with La Chapelle Royale and the Collegium Vocale Gent, with whom he interpreted mainly Johann Sebastian Bach, and also performed Henri Dumont, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Heinrich Schütz and Jean Gilles. Jan Kobow (born 1966) is a German classical tenor in concert, Lied, and Baroque opera. Professional career Jan Kobow was born and raised in Berlin. He was a singer and soloist of the ''Staats- und Domchor, Berlin'' with Christian Grube. He studied the organ at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and graduated in church music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover in 1994. She studied at the University of the Arts Bremen with Elke Holzmann, Harry van der Kamp and Gabriele Schreckenbach. After graduation she continued studying in Stuttgart with Julia Hamari. The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century ( nl, Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw) is a Dutch early music orchestra. Frans Brüggen and Lucy van Dael co-founded the orchestra in 1981. Sieuwert Verster became financial manager in 1984. Although he did not have a formal title with the orchestra, Brüggen served as the ''de facto'' principal conductor of the orchestra from its founding until his death in 2014. Verster has served as the orchestra's manager since its founding. As of August 2014, the orchestra consisted of 55 members, from many different countries, who all play on period instruments. The group was formed as a collective, so all orchestra members and the conductor receive equal shares of concert earnings. The orchestra does not audition its members, but receives them through word-of-mouth invitations. Franciscus ("Frans") Jozef Brüggen (30 October 1934 – 13 August 2014) was a Dutch Conducting, conductor, recorder player and baroque flautist. Biography Born in Amsterdam, Brüggen was the last of the nine children of August Brüggen, a textile factory owner, and his wife Johanna (née Verkley), an amateur singer. He studied recorder (musical instrument), recorder and flute at the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum. He also studied musicology at the University of Amsterdam. In 1955, at the age of 21, he was appointed professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. The Mass in B minor (), BWV 232, is an extended setting of the Mass ordinary by Johann Sebastian Bach.
