Patrick Trezise
Patrick Trezise (born 25 March 1982, in Durban) is a South African judoka, who played for the middleweight category. He is also a four-time medalist for his division at the African Judo Championships. Trezise represented South Africa at the 2008 Summer Olympics, where he competed for the men's middleweight class (90 kg). He lost his first preliminary match by an ippon and a kata guruma (shoulder wheel) to Russia's Ivan Pershin. Because his opponent advanced further into the semi-finals, Trezise offered another shot for the bronze medal by entering the repechage rounds. He was defeated in his first match by Argentina's Diego Rosati, who successfully scored an ippon and a seoi-nage is a shoulder throw, one of the traditional forty throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. Seoi-nage
is a shoulder throw, one of the traditional forty throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the first group, Dai Ikkyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza), of Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a hand technique, te-waza, and is the second throw performed in the Nage-no-kata. Variations The specific techniques of morote-seoi-nage (two hands seoi-nage), or eri-seoi, are usually generalised as simply seoi-nage. The distinctive technical aspect of this classification is that tori (the one executing the technique) grips with their two hands, as opposed to Ippon Seoi Nage, in which only one hand remains gripping while the other slides under uke's (the one receiving the technique) armpit. Kata Guruma
is one of the traditional forty throws of judo as developed by Kano Jigoro. Kata guruma belongs to the third group of the traditional throwing list in the ''Gokyo no waza'' of the Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. Because the technique is not a sweep nor a trip and requires '' tori'' to pull ''uke'' into a carry, it is categorized as a hand throwing technique (''tewaza''). Description In ''The Essence of Judo'', Kyuzo Mifune demonstrates three variations of kata guruma. In the second variation, Mifune steps behind ''uke'', and in the third he steps behind ''uke'' and grabs ''uke''s left leg instead. Ippon
is the highest score a fighter can achieve in a Japanese martial arts ''ippon-wazari'' contest, usually kendo, judo, karate or jujitsu. In Judo In Judo, an ippon may be scored for a throw, a pin, a choke or a jointlock. For throws, the four criteria to grant an ippon are: speed, force, landing on the back and skilful control until the end of the landing. For pinning techniques, the pin must be held continually for 20 seconds. For chokes and locks, ippon is scored when the opponent gives up or is incapacitated.
