Patrick Gay
Patrick Gay was a cabinetmaker and businessmen of Adelaide, South Australia, for whom Gay's Arcade was named. History Patrick Gay, sen. (c. 1815 – 7 October 1866), his wife Agnes Waddell Gay (c. 1816 – 16 November 1903) and their small family left Fifeshire, Scotland, and emigrated to South Australia aboard ''James Fernie'' in 1854. In 1864 he established a cabinetmaking and undertaking business P. Gay & Son at 107 Rundle Street, on the Twin Street corner adjacent George Debney's furniture warehouse and in premises rented from Debney. Patrick Gay (c. 1841 – 30 October 1911), who had been working for Debney, took over the business in 1867. Around 1875 he took over Debney's premises on a 28-year lease. In 1880 the warehouse had a 52-foot frontage to Rundle Street and 212-foot depth, 100-ft depth on Twin Street; the remaining portion at the corner of Twin and Rundle streets being occupied from 1773 by James Calder's City Steam Biscuit Factory. Adelaide Arcade
Adelaide Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade in the Adelaide city centre, centre of Adelaide, South Australia. It is linked to, and closely associated with, Gay's Arcade. History The property on which the Arcade was built was the scene of two disastrous fires: the first was George Debney's fine furniture factory and showrooms at 103–105 Rundle Street (parts of Section 84 and 85), which was destroyed, along with a great deal of stock and raw material, on the evening of 16 July 1855. Robert Evelyn Porter
Sir Robert Evelyn Porter (1913 – 1983), generally known as "Tom", was a South Australian businessman and Mayor of Adelaide from 1968 to 1971. Porter was born in Adelaide, a son of Frederick Windmill Porter (1881–1937) and Clara Frances Niall Porter, née Cudmore (1884–1967), of Adelaide's influential Cudmore family. His grandfather was James Windmill Porter (c. 1850–1918), pioneer of top-dressing with superphosphates; a great-grandfather was Patrick Gay, of Gay's Arcade fame. He grew up with his parents on Edwin Terrace, Gilberton and was educated at St. Peter's College. Porter was for a time the manager of Childerley Park Station, Naracoorte, then served as a lieutenant in the 2nd AIF, promoted to major. He followed his father in the stockbroking business, as a partner in F. W. Porter & Co. of Brookman Building on Grenfell Street, Adelaide. Adelaide Bowling Club was founded in 1897 and is the oldest bowling club in South Australia. The club was founded as the result of a public meeting called by Henry F. Dench and chaired by J. H.
