Patrick Crofton
Patrick Dermott Crofton (29 May 1935 – 5 January 2016) was a Canadian politician, businessman and farmer. Crofton served as a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Crofton was first elected at the riding of Esquimalt—Saanich and served in the 33rd Canadian Parliament. Esquimalt—Saanich
Esquimalt—Saanich was a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1953 to 1988. This riding was created in 1952 from parts of Nanaimo riding. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca and Saanich—Gulf Islands ridings. It consisted of the southern part of Vancouver Island and off-shore islands. Lynn Hunter
Lynn Hunter (born 20 January 1947 in Comox, British Columbia) was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1988 to 1993. Her background prior to election included graduating with distinction in Political Science and History from the University of Victoria in 1985. She then went on to become the Vancouver Island Coordinator for OXFAM Canada, work which included a fact finding trip to Sudan and Eritrea in 1986 to assess the effects of the war and famine in that region. Hunter became a New Democratic Party member of Parliament after winning the Saanich—Gulf Islands electoral district in the 1988 federal election. She served on a number of Parliamentary Committees in the 34th Canadian Parliament including the Environment Committee, two separate committees on the Canadian Constitution and was a frequent contributor to the External Affairs Committee but lost to Jack Frazer of the Reform Party in the 1993 federal election. 1988 Canadian Federal Election
The 1988 Canadian federal election was held on November 21, 1988, to elect members to the House of Commons of Canada of the 34th Parliament of Canada. It was an election largely fought on a single issue: the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA); the Progressive Conservative Party campaigned in favour of it whereas the Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party (NDP) campaigned against it. The incumbent prime minister, Brian Mulroney, went on to lead his Progressive Conservative Party to a second majority government. Mulroney became the party's first leader since John A. Macdonald to win a second majority. The Liberal Party doubled their seat count and experienced a moderate recovery after the 1984 wipeout. The 33rd Canadian Parliament was in session from November 5, 1984, until October 1, 1988. The membership was set by the 1984 federal election on September 4, 1984, and it only changed slightly due to resignations and by-elections prior to being dissolved before the 1988 election. The House of Commons of Canada (french: Chambre des communes du Canada) is the lower house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the Senate of Canada, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada.
