Patricia Donnelly Harris (October 30, 1919 – October 25, 2009) was Miss America in 1939. Early years Born Patricia Mary Donnelly in Durand, Michigan, she was a singer in grade school and on radio programs, and she began singing with a band soon after she finished high school. She also worked as a model for Hudson's department store. Miss America Donnelly was the last to be crowned at the Steel Pier. In the talent competition, she sang the then-new ballad " To You" and the faster-tempo "Old Man Mose". After winning the Miss America title, she traveled across the United States making personal appearances. She was given the nickname "The Long-Stemmed American Beauty". Durand, Michigan
Durand is a city in Shiawassee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,446 at the 2010 census. Nicknamed "Railroad City, USA", it is best known for its large train station which was a major hub for the Grand Trunk Western and Ann Arbor railroads during most of the 20th century, and is currently served by Amtrak. Additionally, several freight carriers use a rail yard in the city, which is accessible from all directions. History Durand was originally called Vernon Center, and under the latter name was platted in 1836 and named from its location in Vernon Township. Miss America 1939, the 13th Miss America pageant, was the last pageant to be held at the famed Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The finals were held on Saturday, September 9, 1939, and Miss Michigan, Patricia Donnelly, was crowned Miss America 1939. The Miss Congeniality Award was also introduced at the 1939 competition. Donnelly later became a singer and actress. Third runner-up Marguerita Skliris became the actress Margia Dean, who starred in such Hollywood films as ''Seven Women from Hell'' and ''The Quatermass Xperiment''. Marilyn Meseke
Marilyn Meseke (; October 7, 1916 – September 12, 2001) was an American beauty queen who had the distinction of being twice crowned Miss Ohio (1931 and 1938) and Miss America in 1938. Early life Meseke was christened, "Mary Ellen Spurrier" in 1917, near Lima, Ohio. While still an infant, her mother surrendered custody to her maternal grandparents, Charlie and Clara Meseke. Following her adoption, she was renamed Marilyn, given her grandmother's surname of Meseke and reared in the family home on South Prospect Street in Marion, Ohio. While still a child, she exhibited a talent for dance and received formal dance instruction throughout her childhood; she later became a tap dance instructor, using the family's living room as her studio. Miss America is an annual competition that is open to women from the United States between the ages of 17 and 25. The J. L. Hudson Company (commonly known simply as Hudson's) was an upscale retail department store chain based in Detroit, Michigan. The Steel Pier is a 1,000-foot-long () amusement park built on a pier of the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, across from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City (formerly the Trump Taj Mahal). Stork Club was a nightclub in Manhattan, New York City. During its existence from 1929 to 1965, it was one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. A symbol of café society, the wealthy elite, including movie stars, celebrities, showgirls, and aristocrats all mixed in the VIP Cub Room of the club. The club was established on West 58th Street in 1929 by Sherman Billingsley, a former bootlegger from Enid, Oklahoma. After an incident when Billingsley was kidnapped and held for ransom by Mad Dog Coll, a rival of his mobster partners, he became the sole owner of the Stork Club. The club remained at its original location until it was raided by Prohibition agents in 1931. After the raid, it moved to East 51st Street.
