Patiala House
The Patiala House is the former residence of the Maharaja of Patiala in Delhi. It is situated near India Gate in central Delhi, India. History It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The building has a central dome with a "butterfly" layout, similar to other Lutyens’ buildings. Unlike some of the princely residences in Delhi, the Patiala House is not clad in sandstone but painted white. When prime minister Indira Gandhi abolished the privy purses of the royals in the 1970s, the royal family sold it to the Indian government. It has been used by District Courts of India as one of its five courts in Delhi and is known as the Patiala House Courts Complex, which has seen numerous extensions and changes that have altered the original appearance of the palace. Maharaja Of Patiala
The Maharaja of Patiala was a maharaja in India and the ruler of the princely state of Patiala, a state in British India. The first Maharaja of Patiala was Baba Ala Singh (1695–1765). Yadavindra Singh became the maharaja on 23 March 1938. He was the last independent maharaja, agreeing to the accession of Patiala State into the newly independent Union of India in 1947. On 5 May 1948, he became Rajpramukh of the new Indian state of Patiala and East Punjab States Union. Early proposals of a Sikh nation of ‘Sikhistan’ led by Maharaja of Patiala were published by Dr VS Bhatti for a “Khalistan led by the Maharaja of Patiala with the aid of a cabinet consisting of representative federating units.”. Patiala House Courts Complex
Patiala House Courts Complex is one of the seven District Courts complexes located near India Gate in the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT of Delhi). The main part is housed in the Patiala House, the former palace of the Maharaja of Himachal Pradesh and Patiala House was rented to Maharaja of Patiala and due to security fraud by Maharaja of Patiala there are criminal cases against Maharaja of Patiala for fabricated evidences. Jaipur House
Jaipur House is the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur in the city of New Delhi, India. It is situated at the end of Rajpath, facing the India Gate. History It was designed by Charles Blomfield, after construction of Lutyens' Delhi, in 1936. Today it houses the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), India's premier art gallery which was established here by Ministry of Culture in 1954. Architecture The structure has a butterfly layout and a central dome. The structure is clad in red and yellow sandstone. To the back of the palace is a large garden, which can be entered through the main ballroom on the ground floor. The ballroom is paneled in dark wood. Baroda House was the residence of the Maharaja of Baroda in Delhi. It is located on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, next to Faridkot House. History It was designed by the architect of New Delhi, Sir Edwin Lutyens. He designed the house on a train and it took 15 years to complete in 1936. Bikaner House
Bikaner House is the former residence of the Maharajah of Bikaner State in New Delhi. It is located close to India Gate. History After the British Raj set up the Chamber of Princes, the rulers needed a residence in the capital city. A number of palaces were constructed in New Delhi, at the coveted Princes’ Park. Around the statue of King George V are the Hyderabad House, Baroda House, Patiala House, Jaipur House,Darbhanga House and Bikaner. It was designed by Charles G Blomfield. After independence it was bought by the state government of Rajasthan. It was renovated in 2014–15 to be used as a space for arts and culture. The India Gate (formerly known as the All India War Memorial) is a war memorial located near the Rajpath on the eastern edge of the "ceremonial axis" of New Delhi, formerly called duty path. It stands as a memorial to 84,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died between 1914 and 1921 in the First World War, in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere in the Near and the Far East, and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. 13,300 servicemen's names, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate. Privy Purse In India
In India, a privy purse was a payment made to the ruling families of erstwhile princely states as part of their agreements to first integrate with India in 1947 after the independence of India, and later to merge their states in 1949, thereby ending their ruling rights. The privy purses continued to be paid to the royal families until the 26th Amendment in 1971, by which all their privileges and allowances from the central government ceased to exist, which was implemented after a two-year legal battle. In some individual cases, privy purses were continued for life for individuals who had held ruling powers before 1947; for instance, HH Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi's allowance was reinstated after a prolonged legal battle, and lasted until she died in 1985.
