Zeena Parkins
Zeena Parkins (born 1956) is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist active in experimental, free improvised, contemporary classical, and avant-jazz music; she is known for having "reinvented the harp". Parkins performs on standard harps, several custom electric harps, piano, and accordion. She is a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow and professor in the Music Department at Mills College. Life and career Born in 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, Parkins studied at Bard College and moved to New York City in 1984. Her work ranges from solo performance to large ensembles. Besides standard and electric harps, her work also incorporates Foley, field recordings, analog synthesizers, samplers, oscillators and homemade instruments. Andrea Parkins is an American composer, sound artist, performer and improvisational musician based in New York City, New York. She is known for her inventive explorations on the electric accordion, generative sound processing, and arrangements of objects and sound. Parkins received a BFA from Tufts University and MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Parkins's work is influenced by the compositional strategies of John Cage and Fluxus and pays homage to musique concrète and 1970s analog synth. Parkins often incorporates electronically processed accordion, customized sound processing, live tape manipulation, analog effects boxes, laptop electronics, acoustic piano, sampling (music), sampling, and amplified objects. David Parkins
David Alan Parkins (born 2 November 1955) is a British cartoonist and illustrator who has worked for D.C. Thomson, publisher of ''The Beano'' and ''The Dandy''. Now based in Canada, he illustrates children's picture books. Parkins was born in Brighton, but moved to Grantham, Lincolnshire at the age of five. He didn't take up art until sixth form, when he also began drawing caricatures of his teachers. He studied Wildlife Illustration at Dyfed College of Art for a year, before switching to graphic design at Lincoln College of Art, specialising in illustration. Graduating in 1979, he became a freelance illustrator, working on postcards, school textbooks, newspapers and magazines as well as comics. Parkins' first work for ''The Beano'' was on " Billy Whizz" in 1989. He quickly made his mark on the strip and the character, and made several changes, the most notable of these being the introduction of Billy's new lightning bolt tracksuit in May 1992. John Parkins
John Parkins (1571–1640) was an English merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1621 to 1622. Parkins was the son of William Parkins of East Shilvinghampton near Portesham in Dorset. He became a merchant in Dorchester. On 1 October 1619 he became bailiff of the town for the third time. In 1621, he was elected Member of Parliament for Dorchester but served only for a year. He became bailiff again on 4 October 1624. On 10 July 1625 the ship ''Francis Sandars'' was taken by French pirates and as a result Parkins lost kerseys to the cost of £700. On 6 October 1629 King Charles granted Dorchester a new charter and Parkins became first mayor under this charter. Parkins died at the age of about 69. Parkins married Rachel Chappell of Exeter as his second wife. William Parkins
William Richard Parkins (20 August 1925 – 1 November 1969) was an English cricketer. Parkins was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Glenfield, Leicestershire. Parkins made his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Cambridge University at Fenner's in 1950. He made four further first-class appearances in 1950, the last of which came against Worcestershire in the County Championship. In his five matches, he scored 125 runs at an average of 12.50, with a high score of 39. He died at Leicester, Leicestershire on 1 November 1969. George Parkins
Sir George Parkins (c. 1576 – 23 August 1626) was an English Member of Parliament. He was the eldest son of Richard Parkins of Bunny, Nottinghamshire and trained in the law at the Inner Temple (1587), being called to the bar in 1598. He succeeded his father in 1603 and was knighted the same year. He was appointed Captain of Walmer Castle for 1601–1609 and High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 1613–14. He was elected MP for Leicester (UK Parliament constituency), Leicester in 1597. He married Mary, the daughter and heiress of Edward Isham of Walmer Castle, Kent with whom he had 4 sons and 3 daughters. Christopher Parkins
Sir Christopher Perkins (or Parkins) (1547? – 1622) was an English Jesuit turned diplomat and MP. Life He was educated at Oxford, and graduated B.A. on 7 April 1565; but on 21 October next year he entered the Society of Jesus at Rome, aged 19. According to Charles Dodd, he was among the Jesuits for many years; but gradually he became estranged from them, and while at Venice, perhaps about 1585, he wrote a book on the society; it does not appear to have been published. It took generally favourable view, but seems to have been subsequently thought by the English government likely to prove damaging. About the same time William Cecil visited Rome; Perkins intervened when his religious opinions created a difficult situation. Perkins is said then to have returned with young Cecil, who recommended him to his grandfather Lord Burghley's favour.
