''Parasyrphus punctulatus'' is a Palearctic species of hoverfly. Distribution It is found from Fennoscandia, south to the Pyrenees; from Ireland, east through Northern Europe and Central Europe, and south to Northern Italy; though European Russia and the Caucasus, on through Siberia and the Russian Far East to the Pacific coast and Japan, as well as the Himalayas and Nepal. Biology Habitat: ''Quercus'', ''Fraxinus'' woodland and ''Betula'', ''Salix'', ''Alnus'' woodland suburban gardens and orchards with mature trees. George Henry Verrall (7 February 1848 – 16 September 1911) was a British horse racing official, entomologist, botanist and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician. Horse racing Verrall was born in Lewes, Sussex. Following education at Lewes Grammar School he became secretary to his elder brother, John Frederick Verrall. John Verrall was a horse-racing official, being clerk of the course at many of the country's biggest meetings. When John died in 1877, George succeeded him. He moved to Newmarket, Suffolk, the centre of the horse-breeding industry, in 1878. Entomology Verrall had a keen interest in natural history, particularly entomology. The Palearctic or Palaearctic is the largest of the eight biogeographic realms of the Earth. It stretches across all of Eurasia north of the foothills of the Himalayas, and North Africa.
