Para Triathlon
Para triathlon is a variant of the triathlon for athletes with a physical disability. The sport is governed by World Triathlon (TRI) (formerly known as ITU), and was first held as a Paralympic event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At events sanctioned by World Triathlon, athletes compete over a Para triathlon sprint distance event with a 750 m swim, 20 km cycle using handcycles, bicycles or tandem bicycles with a guide and a 5 km wheelchair or running race. Athletes compete in nine sport classes according to the nature of their physical impairments, with variations made to the traditional event structure commensurate with their disability. Triathlon
A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of Swimming (sport), swimming, Cycle sport, cycling, and running over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included. The word is of Greek language, Greek origin, from τρεῖς or ''treis'' (three) and ἆθλος or ''athlos'' (competition). The sport originated in the late 1970s in Southern California as sports clubs and individuals developed the sport. This history has meant that #Nonstandard variations, variations of the sport were created and still exist. Jetze Plat
Jetze Plat (born 10 June 1991 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch para-cyclist in the H4 class. He also competes in the paratriathlon. Career Plat was born with two stunted legs. In 1995, Plat started using a handcycle, to cycle to school. Later he started practising the sport para-cycling. In the beginning of his athletic career Plat was coached and trained by Kees van Breukelen. As Plat improved in the sport he was coached by Ralf Bekers. During the World Cup in Rome, Plat qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. In the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, Plat competed in both cycling and para-triathlon. He won the paratriathlon gold medal in the PT1 class. He also won a bronze medal in the Men's Road Race in H5 class. These were his first Paralympic medals. Allysa Seely
Allysa Seely (born January 4, 1989) is an American paratriathlete and gold medalist at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics. Background Seely was born on January 4, 1989. She grew up in Glendale, Arizona and graduated from Mountain Ridge High School in 2007. She attended Arizona State University afterwards. In September 2008 Seely raced her first triathlon as part of a group that raises money for cancer research and then joined the Arizona State University triathlon team. In 2010 Seely was diagnosed with Chiari II malformation, basilar invagination, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. In August, 2013, her left leg was amputated below the knee. In 2020 Seely was diagnosed with endocarditis as well as a blood clot in her heart. Sports career Seely was nationally ranked in the triathlon prior to her diagnoses and amputation. Mohamed Lahna
Mohamed Lahna (born 11 March 1982) is a Moroccan paratriathlete. Lahna won bronze in the men's PT2 paratriathlon at the 2016 Paralympics. Background Mohamed Lahna was born without a right femur; due to this, he was not able to compete in his first triathlon until 2008. He started as a strong swimmer and was able to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar. He went on to represent Morocco until 2016. Andy Lewis (triathlete)
Andrew James Lewis (born 24 January 1983) is a retired British paratriathlete. Lewis is one of Britain's most successful PT2 paratriathletes, winning gold medals at European, world and Paralympic levels. Background As a youngster, Lewis competed for Gloucestershire as a cross-country runner. At the age of 16 he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which eventually resulted in a through the knee amputation in his right leg when he was 22. Career Lewis took up paratriathlon in 2013, competing in the men's PT2 category from 2014. In August 2014 he won the British Paratriathlon National Championships. His first major title came in May 2016, when he finished in first place at the ETU Triathlon European Championships, in Lisbon.
