Papurana
''Papurana'' is a genus of frogs in the family Ranidae, "true frogs". They are known from Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and northern Australia. ''Papurana daemeli'' is the only Ranidae, ranid frog found in Australia. Taxonomy ''Papurana'' was originally introduced as a subgenus of ''Rana (genus), Rana''. It was often included in the then-diverse genus ''Hylarana'', until Oliver and colleagues revised the genus in 2015, delimiting ''Hylarana'' more narrowly and elevating ''Papurana'' to genus rank. Description The unique combination of characters that can diagnose ''Papurana'' is presence of a postocular eye mask, robust body shape, posterior of thighs having strong vermiculations, and dorsolateral folds being either absent or thin, with asperities. The Dorsum (anatomy), dorsum is evenly shagreened to warty and may carry spicules. The body size is from medium to very large. Males have paired, external vocal sac. Species The following species are recognised in the genus ''Papurana'' ...

Papurana Daemeli
''Papurana daemeli'' is a species of "true frog", family Ranidae. It is found in New Guinea, northern Australia, and some smaller islands (Yapen, New Hanover Island, New Britain). It is the only ranid frog found in Australia. In Australia, the species is restricted to the rainforest of northern Queensland and the eastern border of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory. In Australia, it is usually known as wood frog (though in North America this would refer to ''Lithobates sylvaticus'') or sometimes as water frog. Other vernacular names are Australian wood frog, Australian bullfrog, and Arnhem rana. Description Males can grow to and females to in snout–vent length; typical size for Australia are in males and in females. The body is elongated and the limbs are long and muscular. The tympanum is distinct and relatively larger in males than in females. A dorso-lateral skin fold runs from behind the eye to the hindlimb. Skin is smooth or weakly granular. The face mask is not ...

Papurana Elberti
''Papurana elberti'' is a species of true frog. It is native to Indonesia and Timor-Leste and found on the islands of Timor and Wetar. The specific name ''elberti'' honours Johannes Elbert, a German naturalist who joined an expedition to the Lesser Sunda Islands and Sulawesi in 1910. Common name Lesser Sundas frog has been coined for it. Taxonomy Based on molecular data, the previously very diverse genus ''Hylarana'' was split in numerous genera in 2015. Molecular data from ''Papurana elberti'' was not included in the study, and therefore its placement in ''Papurana'' is provisional, pending more morphological and molecular data. Conservation ''Papurana elberti'' has been assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN; officially International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) is an international organization working in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natu ...

Papurana Novaeguineae
''Papurana novaeguineae'' is a species of true frog, family Ranidae. It is endemic to southern New Guinea and occurs between Lake Yamur ( West Papua, Indonesia) and Purari River (Papua New Guinea). Common name New Guinea frog has been coined for it. Description ''Papurana novaeguineae'' is the smallest ''Papurana'' species in New Guinea: males reach maturity below and females below in snout–vent length; these lengths have also been interpreted as the maximum sizes. Although it could be mixed with juveniles of other species, ''P. novaeguineae'' is easy to distinguish from its relatives because it has reduced webbing between the toes: the fourth toe has the last two phalanges free of webbing (one free phalanx or none in other species). The nostrils are relatively widely separated. The male advertisement call is a short series of pulsed notes with a "ringing" quality. The dominant frequency is about 3 kHz. Habitat and conservation ''Papurana novaeguineae'' occurs in tro ...

Papurana Milneana
''Papurana milneana'' is a species of "true frog", family Ranidae. It is endemic to Papua New Guinea where it is found in the upland areas of Milne Bay, Morobe, Northern, and Central Provinces, as well from the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and, tentatively, Louisiade Archipelago. It was originally described as a subspecies of ''Rana grisea'' (now '' Papurana grisea''), but raised to full-species status in 2007. Description Adult males grow to and adult females to in snout–vent length. The snout is acutely pointed. The tympanum is distinct. The fingers have no webbing whereas the toes are webbed to the base of toe discs. The hind limbs are relatively long. Dorsal and lateral surfaces are mostly smooth. Females are dorsally russet or orange brown. There is almost always a clear yellow stripe on the rear of the thigh, contrasting with the chocolate brown ground color. Males are typically dirty brown or tan. The yellow line on the thighs is often short or broken. The male advertis ...

''Papurana volkerjane'' is a species of true frogs, family Ranidae. It is endemic to New Guinea and is known from its type locality, the eastern slopes of the Wondiwoi Mountains, from the Fakfak Mountains (both in West Papua, Indonesia), and from the Bewani and Torricelli Mountainss in the West Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Rainer Günther named the species after his son Volker and daughter-in-law Jane. Description ''Papurana volkerjane'' is a relatively large species, with adult males measuring and adult females in snout–vent length. The overall appearance is robust. It is morphologically similar to '' Papurana aurata'' but has distinctive small glandular ridges across dorsal surface of thighs, as well as a solid white longitudinal stripe, surrounded by a blackish area, on the posterior thigh. The species shows strong sexual dimorphism in colour, at least among individuals in mating condition. Males are dorsally yellow-greyish to golden-yellow, whereas females are bro ...
