Paolo Piccione
Paolo Piccione (born 24 April 1964) is an Italian mathematician working in differential geometry, Riemannian geometry and analysis. He is professor at the University of São Paulo since 1996 and president of the Brazilian Mathematical Society since 2017. Biography Piccione was born in Rome on April 24, 1964, in a genuinely Italian family – his paternal grandfather was from Sicily; and the maternal one of central Italy – of a social class "without any particular prominence", although he enjoyed the important advances of Italian society in the postwar period, Piccione achieved an education in high-level public schools. Like his parents, three decades before him, he graduated from the same Sapienza University of Rome, in Rome, where he obtained Laurea in Matematica and Master degree in 1987 supervisor by Alessandro Figà Talamanca. The calculus of variations (or Variational Calculus) is a field of mathematical analysis that uses variations, which are small changes in functions and functionals, to find maxima and minima of functionals: mappings from a set of functions to the real numbers. Functionals are often expressed as definite integrals involving functions and their derivatives. Functions that maximize or minimize functionals may be found using the Euler–Lagrange equation of the calculus of variations. A simple example of such a problem is to find the curve of shortest length connecting two points. If there are no constraints, the solution is a straight line between the points. ''Communications in Mathematical Physics'' is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Springer. The journal publishes papers in all fields of mathematical physics, but focuses particularly in analysis related to condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, and in operator algebras, quantum information and relativity. History Rudolf Haag conceived this journal with Res Jost, and Haag became the Founding Chief Editor. The first issue of ''Communications in Mathematical Physics'' appeared in 1965. Giulio Magli (born 1964, Rome) is an Italian astrophysicist and archaeo-astronomer working primarily on the relationship between the architecture of ancient cultures and the sky. Biography After receiving a PhD in Mathematical Physics at the University of Milan, Magli developed his academic career at the Politecnico of Milan, where he became full professor of Mathematical Physics in 2005.
