Pancho Quinto
Francisco Hernández Mora (April 23, 1933 – February 11, 2005), better known as Pancho Quinto, was a Cuban rumba percussionist and teacher. He was the founder of Yoruba Andabo and one of the "godfathers" of the guarapachangueo style of Cuban rumba. His solo career began in the 1990s after he gained international attention through his collaborations with Jane Bunnett and other artists. Life and career Early years Francisco Hernández Mora was born on April 23, 1933, in Belén, a neighbourhood in Havana. Between the ages of 12 and 14, he joined the comparsa Los Dandys, where he was given the name Pancho Quinto. Aged 14, Quinto went to work with his father to the docks, where he would come into contact with important figures in the world of rumba, as well as the Abakuá society. He was taught batá drumming by two of the instrument's masters: Pablo Roche and Jesús Pérez. La Sonora Matancera is a Cuban band that played Latin American urban popular dance music. Founded in 1924 and led for more than five decades by guitarist, vocalist, composer, and producer Rogelio Martínez, musicologists consider it an icon of this type of music. Conga Players
The conga, also known as tumbadora, is a tall, narrow, single-headed drum from Cuba. Congas are staved like barrels and classified into three types: quinto (lead drum, highest), tres dos or tres golpes (middle), and tumba or salidor (lowest). Congas were originally used in Afro-Cuban music genres such as conga (hence their name) and rumba, where each drummer would play a single drum. Following numerous innovations in conga drumming and construction during the mid-20th century, as well as its internationalization, it became increasingly common for drummers to play two or three drums. Congas have become a popular instrument in many forms of Latin music such as son (when played by conjuntos), descarga, Afro-Cuban jazz, salsa, songo, merengue and Latin rock. The term rumba may refer to a variety of unrelated music genre, music styles. Originally, "rumba" was used as a synonym for "party" in northern Cuba, and by the late 19th century it was used to denote the complex of secular music styles known as Cuban rumba. Since the early 20th century the term has been used in different countries to refer to distinct styles of music and dance, most of which are only tangentially related to the original Cuban rumba, if at all. The vague Cuban rumba#Etymology, etymological origin of the term rumba, as well as its interchangeable use with guaracha in settings such as Cuban musical theatre, bufo theatre, is largely responsible for such worldwide polysemy of the term. The Cuarteto d'Aida was a famous Cuban close-harmony female singing group. It was directed by the pianist Aida Diestro (1924–1973) in 1952. Tropicana Club
El Tropicana Night Club in Havana, Cuba located in a lush, six-acre (24,000 m²) estate tropical garden opened on December 30, 1939 at the Villa Mina in Marianao. It is located next door to the old Colegio de Belen, presently, the Instituto Técnico Militar. History The Tropicana evolved out of a nightclub called Edén Concert, operated in the late 1930s by the late Cuban impresario Victor de Correa. The club was a combination casino and cabaret located on a rented property in Marianao from Guillermina Pérez Chaumont, known as Mina. The tropical gardens of the Villa Mina provided a natural setting for an outdoor cabaret.
