Panathlon Foundation
The Panathlon Foundation is a charity that gives children with disabilities and special needs in England and Wales opportunities to engage in competitive sport that they are so often otherwise denied. Formed in 1996 by Ashley Iceton, the Panathlon Foundation Ltd (registered charity 1072638), provides sports coaching within schools, sports equipment to schools, sports training to teachers, coaches and young leaders, and primarily sporting competitions. Panathlon is aimed at children aged 5 to 19 years with Physical disabilities and Learning Disabilities. They also have specific visual impairment and deaf programmes. As of July 2020, Panathlon works with SEN schools and SEN units in mainstream schools across 43 counties in England and Wales. Panathlon International
Panathlon International (PI) is a global umbrella organisation of "Panathlon clubs", which are nonprofit non-governmental organisations promoting sports ethics and fair play and opposing discrimination and politicisation in sport. PI is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is a member of the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP) and associate member of the Global Association of International Sports Federations. The name "Panathlon" is from Greek "all" + "sport". PI has more than 300 clubs in 30 countries in 4 continents, with a head office in Rapallo, Italy. As well as promotional work, PI and its members support research on topics concerning sport and its relations with society. Giles Long
Giles Bruce Long MBE (born 9 July 1976, Harold Wood, London), is a retired British swimmer, public speaker, TV presenter & commentator. He is also the inventor of LEXI. Swimmer Long's international swimming career highlight was winning gold in the S8 100 m Butterfly in a new world-record time at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics. The 1994 World Championships was his first major international. He won gold in the S8 100 m butterfly, breaking the world record in the process. He represented Great Britain at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, and won three medals, including gold in the 100 m butterfly. He competed again at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, where he won two gold medals and one silver, and set a new world record in the 100 m butterfly. Stoke Mandeville Stadium is the National Centre for Disability Sport in England. It is sited alongside Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. Stoke Mandeville Stadium is owned by WheelPower, the national organisation for wheelchair sport. History The stadium developed out of the Stoke Mandeville Games — the forerunner of the Paralympic Games — founded in 1948 by Ludwig Guttmann. He was a neurosurgeon at the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital who recognised the value of exercise and competition in the rehabilitation of ex-members of the British armed forces. London Aquatics Centre
The London Aquatics Centre is an indoor facility with two swimming pools and a diving pool in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid as one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was used for the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events. After significant modification, the centre opened to the public in March 2014. Copper Box Arena
The Copper Box Arena is a multi-sport venue built for the 2012 Summer Olympics, located in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, England. Previously known as the Handball Arena, it was renamed because, aside from handball, it hosted modern pentathlon (fencing, shooting, swimming, horse jumping and running) during the Olympics and was the goalball venue for the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is a sporting complex and public park in Stratford, Hackney Wick, Leyton and Bow, in east London. Royal Parks Half Marathon
The Royal Parks Half Marathon, first held in 2008, takes place each October, starting and finishing in Hyde Park. It is the only half marathon that travels through central London and four of the Royal Parks and is one of London's largest half marathons, with over 16,000 participants. 2021 London Marathon
The 2021 London Marathon was the 41st running of the annual London Marathon on 3 October 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the race was postponed from April until October to maximise the chances of a mass participation event. The elite events were won by Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia and Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya, in 2:04:01 and 2:17:43, respectively. The wheelchair races were won by Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär, both of Switzerland, in 1:26:27 and 1:39:52, respectively. Both Hug and Schär set course records, with Hug breaking Australian Kurt Fearnley's record of 1:28:57 set in 2009, and Schär breaking her own record of 1:39:57 set in 2017. The Atacama Desert ( es, Desierto de Atacama) is a desert plateau in South America covering a 1,600 km (990 mi) strip of land on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes Mountains. The Atacama Desert is the driest nonpolar desert in the world, and the second driest overall, just behind some very specific spots within the McMurdo Dry Valleys as well as the only hot true desert to receive less precipitation than the polar deserts, and the largest fog desert in the world. Jody Cundy
Jody Alan Cundy, (born 14 October 1978) is an English cyclist and former swimmer. He has represented Great Britain at seven Summer Paralympics winning eight Gold, one Silver and three Bronze medals across swimming and cycling events. He has also competed in multiple World Championships, winning 22 world titles (19 in Cycling and 3 in Swimming.) The most recent coming at the World Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France October 2022. Personal history Cundy was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire to Alan, a fitter-welder, and Ann, an accountancy clerk. He grew up in Norfolk along with his younger brother Ashley. Cundy was born with a deformed foot, which was amputated when he was three years old. Cundy attended the University of Hertfordshire, based in Hatfield, where he was also a member of the town's swimming club.
