Panagiotis Karatzas (basketball)
Panagiotis Karatzas ( el, Παναγιώτης Καρατζάς; born June 29, 1965 in Athens, Greece) is a retired Greek professional basketball player. Professional career During his pro club career, Karatzas was an important member of the Greek club Pagrati, where he played from 1983 to 1990. After that, he played with the Greek club Olympiacos, from 1990 to 1994. With Olympiacos, he won the Greek League championship in 1993 and 1994, and the Greek Cup title in 1994. In 1995, he returned to Pagrati. He finished his career with the Greek club Agiou Thoma Goudi. National team career Karatzas was a member of the Greece men's national basketball team that played at the 1986 FIBA World Championship. Greece Men's National Basketball Team
The Greece men's national basketball team ( el, Eθνική Oμάδα Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ελλάδος) represents Greece in international basketball. They are controlled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Greece. Greece is currently ranked ninth in the FIBA World Rankings. Greece appeared eight times at the FIBA World Cup, their best performance coming in 2006 as runners-up, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semi-final. Greece took part the in the EuroBasket 28 times, winning the tournament twice; while also coming away with one silver (1989) as well as two bronze medals ( 1949, 2009). Pangrati or Pagrati ( el, Παγκράτι) is a neighborhood in Central Athens, Greece, having an estimated population of 35,173 residents. Named after the ancient sanctuary of Hercules Pancrates ("All Powerful"), its frontage runs from Vasilissis Sofias Avenue along to Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue and Vassileos Alexandrou Avenue, just a few minutes walk from the National Gardens. One of the most important landmarks of Pangrati is the Panathinaiko Stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The 1987 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1987, was the 25th FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. It was held in Greece between 3 and 14 June 1987. Twelve national teams entered the event under the auspices of FIBA Europe, the sport's regional governing body. The Peace and Friendship Stadium, located in the Neo Faliron in Piraeus, Attica, was the hosting venue of the tournament.
