Palilula Neighbourhood, Niš
Palilula (Serbian Cyrillic: Палилула, ) is a neighborhood of the city of Niš, Serbia. It is located in Niš municipality of Palilula. Location Palilula is located in the south-central part of Niš. It is partly flat and partly on hill bordered on the west by the neighborhood of Staro Groblje, on the south by neighborhood of Kovanluk, on the east by neighborhood of Apelovac, and on the north by neighborhoods of Marger. History Palilula is one of the older neighborhoods of Niš. It was developed partly before and partly after 1878. Part of it was developed just after the construction of the railroad. During the Ottoman Empire the cities had been built very often by wooden beams, and there was a fire hazard. Serbian Cyrillic Alphabet
The Serbian Cyrillic alphabet ( sr, / , ) is a variation of the Cyrillic script used to write the Serbian language, updated in 1818 by Serbian linguist Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, Vuk Karadžić. It is one of the two alphabets used to write standard modern Serbian language, Serbian, the other being Gaj's Latin alphabet. Karadžić based his alphabet on the previous Slavonic-Serbian script, following the principle of "write as you speak and read as it is written", removing obsolete letters and letters representing iotified vowels, introducing from the Latin alphabet instead, and adding several consonant letters for sounds specific to Serbian phonology. During the same period, linguists led by Ljudevit Gaj adapted the Latin alphabet, in use in western South Slavic areas, using the same principles. Niš (; sr-Cyrl, Ниш, ; names in other languages) is the third largest city in Serbia and the administrative center of the Nišava District. Palilula ( sr-cyrl, Палилула, ) is one of five Municipalities and cities of Serbia, city municipalities which constitute the city of Niš. It has a population of 73,801 inhabitants. It was formed on 6 June 2002. Geography The municipality borders Crveni Krst, Niš, Crveni Krst and Medijana municipalities in the north, Niška Banja municipality in the east, Gadžin Han and Doljevac municipalities in the south, and Merošina municipality in the south-west. Demographics According to the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 73,801 inhabitants, with 54,597 in the eponymous settlement. Staro Groblje (Serbian Cyrillic: Cтapo Гpoбљe) is a neighborhood of the city of Niš, Serbia. It is located within the municipality of Palilula. The correct "borders" of the neighborhood are not known but many people consider it to be from ''Zmaja of noćaja/Змаја од ноћаја'' street up to the old cemetery which the neighborhood got the name from. Since the neighborhood does not have any municipal status the population is unknown, but as a person who lives there I would say that there are ~3,000-4,000 people. Location Staro Groblje is located in the Southwest part of Niš. It is bordered on the west by the neighborhood of Bubanj, on the south by the neighborhood of Tutunović Podrum, on the east by the neighborhood of Palilula and on the north by the railroad connecting Niš with Sofia, Bulgaria. Medijana ( sr-cyr, Медијана) is one of five city municipalities which constitute the city of Niš. It is the central and the most populous city municipality of Niš with the population of 85,969 inhabitants. Geography The municipality borders Pantelej municipality in the north, Niška Banja municipality in the east, Palilula municipality in the south, and Crveni Krst municipality in the west. Demographics According to the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 85,969 inhabitants, with 81,327 in the eponymous settlement.
