Palco High School
Palco High School is a public high school in Palco, Kansas, United States. It is operated by Palco USD 269 school district, and serves the communities of Damar, Palco, and Zurich. The school mascot is a rooster and the school colors are black and gold. Palco High School is a relatively small and rural high school. Palco, Kansas
Palco is a city in Rooks County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 208. History Palco was established in 1888 by Union Pacific Railroad as a train depot on a newly formed line. The town was given the name Palco for railroad officials Palmer and Cole. The post office was moved from the nearby town of Cresson. Cresson (named for Cresson, PA) was granted a post office in 1879. In 1887, rumors circulated that the railroad would lay track 1-1/2 miles to the south of Cresson. Many citizens and businesses abandoned Cresson to form the community of New Cresson along the expected railroad route. When the railroad track was laid it curved to the north missing New Cresson. The town was soon abandoned. An ironic twist is that the northern route of the track passed near the original town of Cresson. In 1893, Palco was nearly wiped out by a prairie fire. Damar, Kansas
Damar is a city in Rooks County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 112. History Damar was established along the Union Pacific Railroad in 1888 by a community of French Canadians. The community had emigrated from Canada as early as 1871, settling on farms along the Rooks County- Graham County line in northwest Kansas. According to tradition, the community was named after D.M. Marr, the original owner of the town site. The nearby Enfield Post Office was relocated to Damar in 1894. St. Joseph Catholic Church was constructed in 1912. The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. In 1920, Damar had three elevators, two implement dealerships, a hardware store, a lumber yard, a dry goods store, grocery stores, a barbershop, a bank, and an opera hall. Zurich, Kansas
Zurich is a city in Rooks County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 89. History Zurich was established on the plains of northwest Kansas in the late 1870s. In 1880, John and Armenda Webb who were born in Zurich (Switzerland) filed a US postal service application using the name of their birthplace, Zurich. The application was granted and Armenda Webb became the first postmistress of Zurich, operating the post office from her home. Union Pacific Railroad extended a line through western Kansas in 1888. The line was routed just south of Zurich where a train depot was established. In 1918, fire destroyed most of the Zurich business district when the west side of Main Street caught fire. Three years later, fire claimed the post office, creamery and a store at the North end of Main Street. "Zurich It’s Never Idle" was a popular emblem sold in Zurich in the 1920s. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals.
