Palazzo Costa, Piacenza
The Palazzo Costa is a Baroque architecture, Baroque style palace located on Via Roma #80 in Piacenza, Region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. The ''Museo Ambientale'' displaying period art and artifacts is now hosted by part of the palace. History The palace was commissioned by the wealthy merchant and banking Costa family from Genoa. The architecture and the fresco decoration were designed in 1693 by Galli da Bibiena family, Ferdinando Bibiena. Bibiena designed the palace's dramatic entry staircase, leading to a piano nobile which Bibiena painted quadratura and Giovanni Evangelista Draghi frescoed the ''Marriage of Bacchus and Ariadne'' (1699). The palace now hosts the ''Museo Ambientale'' and collects artworks, furniture, and artifacts of mainly the 17th and 18th-century, including works by Salvator Rosa. Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. Giovanni Maria delle Piane (1660 – 28 June 1745) was an aristocratic Genovese who served as primary court painter for over 60 years in the late-Baroque period. He is also known as "il Molinaretto". Biography Giovanni Maria was born in Genoa, Italy, the son of Giovanni Battista delle Piane, from the noble house Delle Piane. He was nicknamed the "Molinaretto" as his grandparents, renown land owners from Polcevera, had watermills (from Italian ''molino'', watermill). Andrea Sacchi
Andrea Sacchi (30 November 159921 June 1661) was an Italian painter of High Baroque Classicism, active in Rome. A generation of artists who shared his style of art include the painters Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Battista Passeri, the sculptors Alessandro Algardi and François Duquesnoy, and the contemporary biographer Giovanni Bellori. Early training Sacchi was born in Rome. His father, Benedetto, was an undistinguished painter. According to the biographer Giovanni Pietro Bellori (who was also a great friend of Sacchi's), Andrea initially entered the studio of Cavalier d'Arpino. Giovanni Battista Gaulli (8 May 1639 – 2 April 1709), also known as Baciccio or Baciccia (Genoese nicknames for ''Giovanni Battista''), was an Italian artist working in the High Baroque and early Rococo periods. He is best known for his grand illusionistic vault frescos in the Church of the Gesù in Rome, Italy. His work was influenced by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Giacinto Gimignani
Giacinto Gimignani (1606 – December 9, 1681) was an Italian painter, active mainly in Rome, during the Baroque period. He was also an engraver in aquaforte. Biography Gimignani was born in Pistoia, where his father, Alessio (1567–1651) was also a painter and former pupil of Jacopo Ligozzi. Gimignani had been patronized by the prominent Guido Rospigliosi, Cardinal Secretary of State, and descendant of prominent Rospigliosi family of Pistoia.
