Pakistan is a member of the South Asian Zone of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and has participated in the South Asian Games since the inception of the game in 1984. The National Olympic Committee of Pakistan, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), formed in 1948, and was affiliated by the International Olympic Committee in the same year. Pakistan has participated all 13 South Asian Games governed by South Asia Olympic Council. Pakistan has performed reasonably well since 1984 South Asian Games, 1984 Kathmandu. Pakistan has been second-ranked team 7 times, third ranked team 4 times, fourth ranked team 2 times. Sialkot ( ur, ) is a city located in Punjab, Pakistan. It is the capital of Sialkot District and the 13th most populous city in Pakistan. The boundaries of Sialkot are joined with Jammu (the winter capital of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir) in the north east, the districts of Narowal in the southeast, Gujranwala in the southwest and Gujrat in the northwest. Gujranwala ( ur, , label=none; ) is a city and capital of Gujranwala Division located in Pakistan. It is also known as "City of Wrestlers" and is quite famous for its food. It is the 5th most populous city proper after Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi respectively. 2024 South Asian Games
The 2024 South Asian Games, officially the XIV South Asian Games, will be a major multi-sport event which will be held in Pakistan,and will have Lahore, the capital of Punjab province as main host city. The cities of Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Islamabad and Sialkot will give support to Lahore hosting some sports. The Games were scheduled to be held in March 2023. but later postponed to March 2024 by SAOC members, at the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This will mark the first time that Pakistan has hosted the South Asian Games since 2004, and the first time that Pakistan has hosted the event outside of Islamabad. 2004 South Asian Games
The 2004 South Asian Games, officially known as the IX South Asian Federation Games, were held in Islamabad, Pakistan from 29 March to 7 April 2004. Originally scheduled for 2001, the games were postponed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States in which the US later declared Pakistan a major non-NATO ally. The slogan for the Games was ''Rising Above''. For the first time, Afghanistan participated in the games. Postponements The games in Islamabad were originally to be held from 6 to 15 October 2001, but they were inevitably rescheduled (with the location remaining unchanged) for 30 March 2002 due to the War in Afghanistan (2001–present), invasion of Afghanistan. 2006 South Asian Games
The 2006 South Asian Games (also known as the 10th South Asian Games) were held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 18 August to 28 August 2006, in the Sugathadasa Stadium with more than 2000 sportspersons competing in the record 20 disciplines of Sports. The 10th edition of SAF Games also marked the debut for Afghanistan. Another highlight of 2006 SAF Games was unprecedented high levels of security for officials & players amid violent clashes between the Sri Lankan Government's troops and LTTE. Earlier in 2005, the Games, originally scheduled to be held in 2005, had been postponed following the Indonesian tsunami wave devastated the northern and eastern region. 1984 South Asian Games
The 1984 South Asian Games (or 1st SAF Games) was the first edition of South Asian Games. It was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 17 to 23 September 1984. The number of disciplines were restricted to five only. India topped the medal tally, winning 88 medals. Half of these medals were golds. There were 28 silvers and 16 bronze medals won by India. Sri Lanka followed India by winning 7 golds, 11 silvers and 19 bronze medals whereas Pakistan got 5 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze medals. As the games were held for the first time, all the gold medalists created new games records which were shattered in the subsequent editions. However, the two records created in swimming remain intact till date. Bula Choudhury, Bula Choudhary of India won the 100-metre freestyle event clocking 1:2:81 whereas the Indian relay team won the 4x100 metre freestyle event which continue to find place in the record books.
