Patrick Page Cortez is an American politician and businessman from the state of Louisiana. A Republican, he has represented the Louisiana State Senate's 23rd district, based in southern Lafayette, since 2012. In 2020, Cortez was unanimously elected Senate President, succeeding term-limited John Alario. From 2008 until 2012, Cortez represented the 43rd district in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He lives with his wife and two children in Lafayette, where he owns and operates a La-Z-Boy La-Z-Boy Inc. The Louisiana State Senate (french: Sénat de Louisiane) is the upper house of the state legislature of Louisiana. All senators serve four-year terms and are assigned to multiple committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate is composed of 39 senators elected from single-member districts from across the state of Louisiana by the electors thereof. Senators must be a qualified elector (registered voter), be at least eighteen years of age, be domiciled in their district for at least one year, and must have been a resident of the state for at least two years. John Alario
John A. Alario, Jr. is an American politician from Louisiana who represented the 8th district in the Louisiana State Senate from 2008 until 2020. Currently a Republican, Alario previously represented District 83 in the Louisiana House of Representatives as a Democrat between 1971 and 2007. Alario was term-limited from the Senate in 2019, and chose not to seek another office. Alario was the President of the Louisiana State Senate, serving in that role between 2012 and 2020; he is also a former two-term Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives. He is the first politician in Louisiana history to hold both roles for two terms each, as well as the longest-serving legislator in state history.
