Paddy Roe
Paddy Roe (1912 (estimate) – 2001), also known as Lulu was an Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal Elder of the Goolarabooloo tribe (also spelt ''Gularabulu'') of the Nyigina people, Nyigina (also spelt ''Nyikina'', and listed as ''Njikena'' by Norman Tindale, Tindale) ethnic group in Australia. He was an author who won the Western Australian Week Literary Award in 1985, and was short-listed for the National Book Council Award in 1983, and the New South Wales Premier's Literary Award in 1985. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 1990 Australia Day Honours for "service to Aboriginal welfare". He has collaborated on works such as ''Gularabulu, Stories from the West Kimberley'' and others. Paddy Roe was born, and grew up on Roebuck Plains Station, near Broome, Western Australia, Broome. Aboriginal Australians
Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders collectively. It is generally used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed. Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically and culturally distinct, despite extensive cultural exchange with some of the Aboriginal groups. Nyigina People
The Nyikina people (also spelt Nyigina and Nyikena, and listed as Njikena by Tindale) are an Aboriginal Australian people of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. They come from the lower Fitzroy River (which they call ''mardoowarra''). Language The Nyigina language is one of several eastern varieties of the Nyulnyulan languages, closely related to Warrwa and Yawuru. It is still (2012) spoken by around 10 people. Education The Nyigina, together with the Mangala people, run the Nyikina Mangala Community School a school at Jarlmadangah in West Kimberley. The Nyigina-Mangala peoples also run another school, together with the Walmajarri, at Looma. Native title In 1998 the Nyigina people undertook legal proceedings to pursue their native title claims. Norman Tindale
Norman Barnett Tindale AO (12 October 1900 – 19 November 1993) was an Australian anthropologist, archaeologist, entomologist and ethnologist. Life Tindale was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1900. His family moved to Tokyo and lived there from 1907 to 1915, where his father worked as an accountant at the Salvation Army mission in Japan. Norman attended the American School in Japan, where his closest friend was Gordon Bowles, a Quaker who, like him, later became an anthropologist. The family returned to Perth in August 1917, and soon after moved to Adelaide where Tindale took up a position as a library cadet at the Adelaide Public Library, together with another cadet, the future physicist, Mark Oliphant. In 1919 he began work as an entomologist at the South Australian Museum. Roebuck Plains Station
Roebuck Plains Station is a pastoral lease that is located close to the township of Broome in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is one of the closest pastoral leases to Broome. Roebuck Plains is also the name of a roadhouse on the Great Northern Highway, just east of Broome. The ''Plains'' in the name is associated with wetlands situated adjacent to Roebuck Bay. Description The station is located approximately east of Broome on a rich marine floodplain. It occupies an area of and is able to support around 20,000 head of cattle. The property is a mixture of floodplains and sandy pindan country. History The traditional owners of the area are the Yawuru peoples. The property was acquired and developed by the pearlers, Streeter and Company, to supply meat to Broome. A slaughterhouse was also established on the outskirts of town to process the cattle and sheep that were being raised on the property. Broome, also known as Rubibi by the Yawuru people, is a coastal pearling and tourist town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, north of Perth. In the the population was recorded as 14,660.
