Pacific Playwrights Festival
The Pacific Playwrights Festival (PPF), a national forum for playwrights and theatre leaders, is dedicated to developing and producing new American plays. It is held every summer at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California. Within the American theatre there is an ongoing need for playwrights to have the opportunity to develop new work with the support of a community of artists. In recent years, many programs that did exist have been redirected or ended. The goal of PPF is to provide a gathering place for writers and theatre leaders to meet informally, sharing ideas and interests as new projects emerge. The Festival includes public play readings that showcase new works by established and emerging writers, as well as two world premiere productions. Tom Donaghy
Tom Donaghy is an American playwright who works in television and film. Biography Tom Donaghy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Hofstra University for two years before transferring to the New York University Tisch School of the Arts Undergraduate Drama Program. His teachers at NYU included Edward Albee, Wendy Wasserstein, Julian Beck and Judith Malina, Jean-Claude van Itallie, Ron Argelander, Anne Bogart, John Guare, Gregory Mosher, William H. Macy and David Mamet. During this time he work/studied with Richard Schechner in the Department of Performance Studies, and interned at Mabou Mines, where he assisted JoAnne Akalaitis during post-production of her film ''Dead End Kids.'' Luis Alfaro
Luis Alfaro (born 1963 in Los Angeles, California) is a Chicano performance artist, writer, theater director, and social activist. He grew up in the Pico Union district near Downtown Los Angeles, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in East Los Angeles. His plays and fiction are set in Los Angeles's Chicano barrios, including the Pico Union district, and often feature gay and lesbian and working-class themes. Many of Alfaro's plays also deal with the AIDS pandemic in Latino communities. Noted plays include "Bitter Homes and Gardens," "Pico Union," "Downtown," "Cuerpo Politizado," "Straight as a Line," "Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner," "No Holds Barrio," and "Black Butterfly." Octavio Solis (born 1958) is an American playwright and director whose plays have been produced and show theaters and small companies across the United States. Cuchifritos () or cochifritos refers to various fried foods prepared principally of pork in Spanish and Puerto Rican cuisine. In Spain, cuchifritos are a typical dish from Segovia in Castile. The dish consists of pork meat fried in olive oil and garlic and served hot. In Puerto Rico they include a variety of dishes including ''morcilla'' (blood sausage), ''papas rellenas'' (fried potato balls stuffed with meat), and ''chicharron'' (fried pork skin), and other parts of the pig prepared in different ways. Some cuchifritos dishes are prepared using plantain as a primary ingredient. Cuchifritos vendors also typically serve juices and drinks such as passionfruit, pineapple, and coconut juice, as well as ''ajonjolí'', a drink made from sesame seeds. José Rivera (playwright)
José Rivera (born March 24, 1955) is a playwright and the first Puerto Rican screenwriter to be nominated for an Oscar. Early years Rivera was born in the Santurce section of San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1955. He was raised in Arecibo where he lived until 1959. Rivera's family migrated from Puerto Rico when he was 5 years old, and moved to New York City. They settled down in Long Island, whose small town environment would be of an influence to him in the future. His father was a taxi driver, he said "...for a long time I just wanted to do better than him...so for years I wanted to be a bus driver."
