P. N. Vinayachandran
P. N. Vinayachandran is a Professor of Oceanography at the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (CAOS), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He is the recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, 2008 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award. Biography P. N. Vinayachandran hails from the state of Kerala. He obtained his M.Sc. (Engg.) in Oceanography from the Indian Institute of Science and Doctorate in Oceanography in 1996 from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Having done Post-doctoral research in the University of Tokyo he continued in Japan to work as a Senior Researcher at the Frontier System for Global Change, JAMSTEC. In 1999, he returned to India to join as a member of Faculty at the Center for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru India, where he is currently a professor of oceanography. Satish Ramnath Shetye
Satish Ramnath Shetye (born 1950) is an Indian geophysicist, oceanographer and a former vice chancellor of the University of Goa. He is a former director of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and is known for his researches on the monsoon-driven currents along the Indian coast. He is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India as well as the Indian Geophysical Union. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences in 1992. Sulochana Gadgil
Sulochana Gadgil is an Indian meteorologist who retired as Professor from the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (CAOS) in Bangalore, India. She has studied the how and why of monsoon, including farming strategies to cope with rainfall variability and modeling ecological and evolutionary phenomena. Her research led to the discovery of a basic feature of the sub-seasonal variation in the monsoon cloud bands. She demonstrated that the monsoon is not a gigantic land-sea breeze but instead is a manifestation of the seasonal migration of a planetary scale system which is seen over non-monsoonal regions as well. The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) is a science award in India given annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and physics. The prize recognizes outstanding Indian work (according to the view of CSIR awarding committee) in science and technology. It is the most coveted award in multidisciplinary science in India.
