P.J. Molloy
P. J. Molloy (born 30 April 1952) is an Irish former Hurling, hurler who played as a left wing-forward for the Galway GAA, Galway senior team. Born in Athenry, County Galway, Molloy first played competitive hurling in his youth. He made his first impression on the inter-county scene when he joined the Galway under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the National Hurling League 1971-72, 1971–72 National Hurling League. Molloy went on to play a key role for Galway for sixteen years, and won two All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on five occasions. As a member of the Connacht GAA, Connacht inter-provincial team at various times throughout his career, Molloy won five Railway Cup medals. St. Mary's, Athenry is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Athenry in County Galway, Ireland. In men's competitions, the club is a dual club competing in both Gaelic football and hurling at various age levels. The club also competes in camogie competitions, and has won several county, province and national titles in the sport. History Athenry GAA club was founded in 1885. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the club fielded both Gaelic football and hurling teams. The club also participated in Gaelic handball, handball competitions. While camogie was played locally from at least the 1920s, Athenry's camogie club was formally established in 1973. Hurling The club contested its first county final in 1977. Midleton Hurling and Football Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the town of Midleton in County Cork, Ireland. The club plays in the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. History The concept of a Gaelic Athletic Association was first mooted in 1883 when a sub-committee of the Irish Republican Brotherhood was formed with the ideal of creating a National Athletic body. Midleton man, P.N Fitzgerald was one of the committee members who eventually set up the Gaelic Athletic Association and thus Midleton's love affair and commitment to the G.A.A. was established. Liam O'Brien (hurler)
Liam 'Chunky' O'Brien (1949 – 23 August 2021) was a former Republic of Ireland, Irish sportsperson. He played senior hurling with the Kilkenny GAA, Kilkenny inter-county team in the 1970s. Early life Liam 'Chunky' O'Brien was born in Kilkenny in 1949. He was educated locally at St. John's De La Salle, a school associated with the O'Loughlin Gaels GAA, O'Loughlin Gaels hurling club. In spite of this, O'Brien would later become a star with the famous James Stephens (GAA Club), James Stephens club. Playing career Club O'Brien had much success with the James Stephens club and won his first Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship medal in 1975 before later winning a Leinster Senior Club Hurling Championship, Leinster club title. Séamus Shinnors
James N. Shinnors''s (born 1945) is a retired Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Newport and with the Tipperary and Galway senior inter-county teams in the 1970s. Early life Séamus Shinnors was born in Newport, County Tipperary in 1945. He was educated at the local national school and later attended Limerick CBS. Here his hurling skills first came to prominence. Shinnors won a Harty Cup medal with the school in 1964. Playing career Club Shinnors played his club hurling with his local club in Newport, however, he never won a senior county title. After moving to County Galway he later played hurling with Ballinasloe. Inter-county Shinnors first came to prominence on the inter-county scene with the Tipperary under-21 hurling team in the 1960s. The Gaelic Athletic Association-Gaelic Players' Association All Stars Awards (often known simply as the All Stars) are awarded annually to the best player in each of the 15 playing positions in Gaelic football and hurling. Additionally, one player in each code is selected as Player of the Year. The awards were instituted in 1971. Since 2011 they have been presented jointly by the Gaelic Athletic Association and the representative body for inter-county players, the Gaelic Players Association. The GAA Hurling Under-20 All-Ireland Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling Under-20 All-Ireland Championship) is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition for male players between the ages of 17 and 20 in Ireland. The championship was contested as the All-Ireland Under-21 Championship between 1964 and 2018 before changing to an under-20 age category from 2019. The final, currently held on the fourth Sunday in August, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during the summer months, and the results determine which team receives the James Nowlan Cup.
