Orfeas
Orfeas ( el, Ορφέας), named after the mythical musician Orpheus, is a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Soufli, of which it is a municipal unit. Its land area is 643.266 km² (248.366 sq mi) and its population was 4,761 inhabitants at the 2011 census. It is located in the north-central part of Evros, and borders both southeastern Bulgaria and northwestern Turkey. The seat of the municipality was in Lavara (pop. 1,093 in 2011). Much of the land is mountainous and forested to the west, extending up to the Rhodope regional unit. It is linked with GR-51 (Alexandroupoli – Orestiada – Edirne in Turkey and Svilengrad in Bulgaria). The town of Lávara sits on a plain. Amorio, Evros
Amorio ( el, Αμόριο, Amório, ) is a village in the municipal unit of Orfeas, northeastern Evros, Greece. It is situated at 2 km from the right bank of the river Evros, that forms the border with Turkey here. Amorio is 6 km northeast of Lavara, 7 km southwest of Didymoteicho and 21 km west of Uzunköprü (Turkey). The Greek National Road 51/E85 (Alexandroupoli - Orestiada - Svilengrad) and the railway from Alexandroupoli to Didymoteicho pass through the village. Historical population History After the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, the area of Western Thrace became part of Bulgaria. As a result of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly, it became a part of Greece. Kyriaki, Evros
Kyriaki ( el, Κυριακή) is a village in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece, in the municipal unit of Orfeas of the municipality Soufli. With 100 inhabitants (2011 census) it is the least populated community in the municipal unit. Kyriaki is in a valley in the wooded Eastern Rhodope Mountains, 15 km southeast of the Bulgarian-Greek border. It is situated between the villages Mikro Dereio and Protokklisi. Population History The village was founded by the Ottoman Turks in the 14th century, it was known as Kayadjik(Turkish: ''Kayajik''). Its population was 310 Bulgarian families in 1830, 236 families (houses) in 1878, and 230 families in 1912. Mikro Dereio
Mikro Dereio ( el, Μικρό Δέρειο) is a village and a community in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. It is situated on the left bank of the river Erythropotamos, in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The border with Bulgaria is 5 km to the north. Mikro Dereio is on the Greek National Road 53. In 2011 its population was 158 for the settlement and 1,903 for the community, making it the most populous community of the municipal unit of Orfeas. The community consists of the villages Mikro Dereio, Geriko, Goniko, Mega Dereio, Petrolofos, Roussa and Sidirochori. Population History The village was founded by the Ottoman Turks in the 14th century, it was known as ''Malak Dervent'' (Малък Дервент) in Bulgarian. Protokklisi
Protokklisi ( el, Πρωτοκκλήσι meaning the first church, bg, Башклисе) is a village and a community in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. Protoklissi is in the municipal unit of Orfeas. In 2001 its population was 260 for the village and 790 for the community, including the village Agriani. Protokklisi is located about 15 km northwest of Soufli, in the valley of a right tributary of the river Evros. Population History The name of the village during the Ottoman rule was Bashklise (Başkilise in Turkish, Башклисе ''Bašklise'' in Bulgarian). In 1830, it had 100 Bulgarian families, in 1878 and 1912 the village had 105 Bulgarian families. According to professor Lyubomir Miletich, the 1912 population contained 100 Bulgarian families. Didymoteicho
Didymoteicho ( el, Διδυμότειχο, Didymóteicho ) is a city located on the eastern edge of the Evros regional unit of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in northeastern Greece. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name. The town (pop. 9,263 in 2011) sits on a plain and located south east of Svilengrad, south of Edirne, Turkey and Orestiada, west of Uzunköprü, Turkey, about 20 km north of Soufli and about 90 km north of Alexandroupoli. Greek National Road 51
Greek National Road 51 ( el, Εθνική Οδός 51, abbreviated as EO51) is a single carriageway road in northeastern Greece. It connects the Greek National Road 2 (Florina - Thessaloniki - Alexandroupoli - Turkey) near Feres with the Bulgarian border near Ormenio. The main towns on the GR-51 are Didymoteicho and Orestiada. The entire GR-51 is part of the European route E85. Its length is about 128 km. It runs from south to north, parallel to the river Evros. Route The southern end of the GR-51 is in the village Ardani, part of the municipality Feres, about 40 km east of Alexandroupoli. Here it branches off the GR-2 (the old Egnatia Odos). 2 km north is a new interchange with the Egnatia Odos freeway. The highway bypasses Soufli, Didymoteicho and Orestiada. Metaxades
Metaxades ( el, Μεταξάδες, ) is a large village and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Didymoteicho, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 211.238 km2. In 2011 its population was 687 for the village, 717 for the community and 3,415 for the municipality. It's a settlement where the popular form of the most characteristic industrial buildings of Thrace was created. These buildings are the koukoulospita (cocoon houses) made for housing families and hosting sericulture as a homemade activity. These residencies did not have any particularities but inside them housing was restricted and the traditional chagiati (roofed balcony) was a big hall with wooden piers. Soufli
Soufli ( el, Σουφλί) is a town in the Evros regional unit, Greece, notable for the silk industry that flourished there in the 19th century. The town stands on the eastern slope of the twin hill of Prophet Elias, one of the easternmost spurs on the Rhodope Mountains. Evros ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Έβρου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Its name is derived from the river Evros, which appears to have been a Thracian hydronym. Evros is the northernmost regional unit.
