Operation Pegasus (board Game)
''Operation Pegasus'' is a board wargame published by Task Force Games that simulates the 1968 Battle of Khe Sanh during the Vietnam War. Background In early 1968 during the Vietnam War, a large force of the North Vietnamese People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) encircled and besieged two regiments of United States Marine Corps defending the Khe Sanh Combat Base, hoping to draw American relief forces into a series of ambushes in a duplication of their 1954 defeat of French forces at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. In March 1968, an overland relief expedition called Operation Pegasus was launched by a joint United States Army/Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) task force. But as PAVN forces gathered in ambush positions along the highway to Khe Sahn, helicopters of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Air Cavalry Division inserted infantry into flanking positions, driving the PAVN forces out into the open to be decimated by supporting artillery fire. ''Fire & Movement: The Forum of Conflict Simulation'' was a magazine devoted to wargames, both traditional board wargames and computer wargames. It was founded by Rodger MacGowan in 1975, and began publication the following year. In February 1982, Fire & Movement was acquired by Steve Jackson Games. In January 1985 the magazine was sold again to Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI). In 1988, World Wide Wargames (also known as 3W) acquired Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI), publisher of ''Fire & Movement'', ''Battleplan'' and ''Space Gamer'', leading to a complete merger of the two companies. 3W then continued on to publish four gaming magazines simultaneously. ''Phoenix'' was a magazine primarily focussed on board wargames. It was published in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s by Simpubs Ltd., the British subsidiary of American game company Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI). History In 1974, SPI started to ship some of their wargames to J.D. Bardsley in the UK, who acted as a sales representative using the name SP/UK. Bardsley sold the games either via mail order or face to face at games conventions. Sales increased rapidly, and by March 1976, SP/UK had sold 25,000 units. A microgame is a board game or wargame packaged in a small set. Description Microgames enjoyed popularity during the 1980s and have seen a revival with the popularity of tabletop games in the 21st century. The term generally refers to board games or wargames which were packaged and sold with instructions and maps or playing surfaces printed in a booklet format, or as one large sheet folded until it became "pocket sized" (approximately 4×7 inches). Game pieces (also known as chits or counters) were printed on one or more sheets of thick paper which the player sometimes had to cut for themselves. Other microgames had fully die-cut cardboard sheets like those included with most board wargames. Steve Jackson Games used the Pocket Box to package many of their games in this format. Hex Grid
A hex map, hex board, or hex grid is a game board design commonly used in wargames of all scales. The map is subdivided into a hexagonal tiling, small regular hexagons of identical size. Advantages and disadvantages The primary advantage of a hex map over a traditional square grid map is that the distance between the center of each and every pair of adjacent hex cells (or ''hex'') is the same. By comparison, in a square grid map, the distance from the center of each square cell to the center of the four diagonal adjacent cells it shares a corner with is times that of the distance to the center of the four adjacent cells it shares an edge with. This equidistant property of all adjacent hexes is desirable for games in which the measurement of movement is a factor.
