Widgey R
Bodgies and widgies refer to a youth subculture that existed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1950s, similar to the rocker (subculture), rocker culture in the UK or Greaser (subculture), Greaser culture in the United States. Most bodgies rode motorbikes but some had cars, many of which were hotted-up e.g. mag wheels, hot dog muffler, etc. The males were called bodgies and the females were called widgies. Bodgies were often depicted in Australian media and folk-lore as louts. On 1 February 1951 the ''Sydney Morning Herald'' wrote on its front page: "What with "bodgies" growing their hair long and getting around in satin shirts, and "wedgies" cutting their hair short and wearing jeans, confusion seems to be arising about the sex of some Australian adolescents." In New Zealand the Mazengarb Report (Report of the Special Committee on Moral Delinquency in Children and Adolescents) of 1954 was partly a response to the emergence of the bodgie & widgie subculture. Collinson & Dean
Collinson and Dean were a British comedy double act popular during the 1920s and 1930s. They were Will Collinson (born William Valentine Malivoire; 14 February 1882 – June 1958) and Alfie Dean (born Alfred Corfield; 7 March 1902 – 22 September 1948). London-born Collinson had toured Britain, Australia and America as a comedy sketch writer and performer, before he established a working partnership with Alfie Dean in 1925. Dean had started his own career as a juvenile performer in 1915, and the contrast between the pair's ages and height (Collinson was tall, Dean was short) formed part of the basis of their humour. Collinson was a blustery and middle-aged straight man, while Dean goaded him with inane questions, quips, puns and non sequiturs. Unlike many other double acts such as Flanagan and Allen, the audience never felt that Collinson and Dean had an underlying affection for one another, more that they were obliged to co-exist. Garland Wilson
Garland Lorenzo Wilson (June 13, 1909 – May 31, 1954) was an American jazz pianist, perhaps best known for his work with Nina Mae McKinney. Wilson was a boogie-woogie and stride pianist. Life and career Garland Wilson was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, United States. Wilson attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. and, in the 1930s, worked in New York City at nightclubs in the area. In 1932, the pianist joined Nina Mae McKinney on a European tour. Wilson worked extensively in England as a member of local groups, and recorded with trumpeter Nat Gonella. In the liner notes of the CD box ''l'intégrale Django reinhardt - vol 2'' he is quoted as being accompanist of French singer Jean Sablon, together with guitarist Django Reinhardt on two sides recorded on November 1, 1935 in Paris.
