Olimpia Cagliari is an Italian amateur basketball club based in Cagliari, Sardinia. It is most famous for the period in the 1970s where, under the name Brill Cagliari, the team played in the first division Serie A. History Early years (1953–1968) Olimpia Cagliari was founded on 23 February 1953 when a group of youngsters, led by Bebi Mosca and with members such as brothers Antonio and Carlo Pirastu, split from Gruppo Sportivo Aquila (founded in 1944, the city's oldest basketball team) to form the club. Its numbers were swelled in the following years by a contingent from Esperia Cagliari, a club that would later become their fierce rivals. Starting from the regional leagues, the club moved up to the second division Serie B in 1965. John Sutter (basketball)
John Augustus Sutter (February 23, 1803 – June 18, 1880), born Johann August Sutter and known in Spanish as Don Juan Sutter, was a Swiss immigrant who became a Mexican and later an American citizen, known for establishing Sutter's Fort in the area that would eventually become Sacramento, California, the state's capital. Although he became famous following the discovery of gold by his employee James W. Steve Puidokas
Steven John Puidokas (April 12, 1955 – August 12, 1994) was an American professional basketball player in Europe. He played college basketball for the Washington State Cougars from 1973 to 1977. He left Washington State as both their all-time leading scorer with 1,894 points and all-time leading rebounder with 992 rebounds. He was inducted posthumously into the Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Hall of Honor in 2012. Puidokas was the first Washington State men's basketball player to have his number (55) retired, and remained the only one until the school retired Klay Thompson's in 2020. As a high school player, Puidokas was named a third-team All-American by ''Parade Magazine'' in 1973. Gregory Darryle Howard (born January 8, 1948) is an American former professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for two seasons. Career Howard attended Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh until 1966. After one year at Hartnell College, he enrolled at the University of New Mexico, playing for the New Mexico Lobos men's basketball team from 1967 to 1969. In 1968-69, he was the Lobos leading scorer (19.7 points per game). In a total of 45 games for New Mexico, he averaged 16.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per contest. Howard had 22 double-doubles for the Lobos. After playing for one season in the Italian Serie A for Brill Cagliari, he was selected in the first round of 1970 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. Serie A2, known for sponsorship reasons as Serie A2 Old Wild West, is a men's basketball league in Italy. It constitutes the second-tier of the Italian league pyramid, below the first division LBA and above the third division Serie B, with promotion/relegation occurring between these leagues. It is run by the Lega Nazionale Pallacanestro (LNP), itself regulated by the FIP, the Italian federation. Names History The league was created in May 1974, by the Lega Basket, the organisation in charge of running the LBA (to this day), that decided to create a new second division with 10 clubs. The two that were relegated during that season, and 8 from the now-former second tier Serie B, chosen with an on and off the court criteria.
