Goose Creek (Snake River)
Goose Creek is a long tributary of the Snake River. Beginning at an elevation of in the Cassia Division of the Sawtooth National Forest in southwestern Cassia County, Idaho, it flows south into Elko County, Nevada, and loops back around into Cassia County, briefly crossing Box Elder County, Utah, in the process. It is impounded by Oakley Dam several miles south of Oakley, Idaho, forming Lower Goose Creek Reservoir. All of the creek's water is stored for irrigation, so its channel from the reservoir to its mouth near Burley, Idaho, is dry and largely obliterated by agriculture. Goose Creek has a watershed. The California Trail followed Goose Creek from a point just north of the Idaho/Utah border southwest across northwestern Utah to Little Goose Creek in northeastern Elko County, Nevada. Gobo Fango
Gobo Fango (ca. 1855 – died 1886) was a South African (Xhosa Tribe) who emigrated to the United States with a white Latter-day Saint family in 1861. While he never joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) he was one of the most prominent people of African descent in nineteenth-century Utah. He was murdered in a confrontation with white cowboys in Idaho in 1886. Early life Gobo Fango was born near the Eastern Cape Colony of South Africa following the Eighth Cape Frontier War in 1855. The War began when Dutch settlers introduced cattle disease to South Africa which led to a famine. A Xhosa priestess named Nongqawuse promised the Xhosa that if they killed all of their cattle that they would be resurrected and multiplied, providing more food and labor for South Africans. Diamondfield Jack
Jackson Lee "Diamondfield Jack" Davis (12 August 1863 – 2 January 1949) was pardoned for the 1896 Deep Creek Murders in Idaho and would later strike it rich in Nevada, where he established several mining towns, one named after his nickname "Diamondfield". Life Davis got his nickname when he went west to Silver City, Idaho on the rumor of a diamond strike. The rumor led to nothing but after talking so much about it he got the nickname "Diamondfield Jack". After the failed prospecting attempt Jack was hired by Sparks-Harrell cattle company on the Idaho-Nevada border. Davis' job was to keep sheepherders off the cattle's land and after a confrontation that led to wounding of a sheepherder named William Tolman. The sheepherders would change their bed every night to a different position so that the head of the bed would be in a different direction; for the cattlemen would shoot at the head of the beds. Howells Opera House
Howells Opera House is a historic opera house located in Oakley, Idaho, on Blaine Street. The opera house is registered with the Idaho State Historical Society. The Opera house was built by the first prosecuting attorney for Cassia County, Judge B.P. (Benjamin Price) Howells. The building construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1907 for the cost of $22,000 ($757,000 adjusted for inflation today). The opera House is currently owned and operated by the Oakley Valley Arts Council. It has been known by several names, including the Oakley Playhouse (c. 1907), Cassia County Playhouse (c. 1929), and most notably as the Howells Opera House. Description The opera house has a square gable false front with a central door flanked by segmental-arched openings.
