Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District
Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District is a school district headquartered in Oyster Bay hamlet in the town of Oyster Bay, New York on Long Island. The district was created on July 1, 1960, by the action of the voters in the former Oyster Bay and East Norwich School Districts. The district's boundaries include the hamlets of Oyster Bay and East Norwich and the incorporated villages of Centre Island, Oyster Bay Cove, Cove Neck, and portions of Mill Neck, Muttontown, Laurel Hollow, and Upper Brookville. There are three schools currently in the district: Roosevelt Elementary School (Grades K-2), James H. Vernon Middle School (Grades 3–6), and Oyster Bay High School (Grades 7–12). History The first schoolhouse in Oyster Bay was built before the American Revolutionary War by Thomas Youngs, a short distance up Cove Hill from his homestead in Oyster Bay Cove. Muttontown
Muttontown is a village located within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 3,497 at the 2010 census. History During colonial times, the area was used to raise sheep for wool and meat. The village was incorporated in 1931. The name of the village stems from its former use as pasturage for sheep. Zog of Albania bought the local Knollwood Estate in 1951, but sold it in 1955. The Benjamin Moore Estate was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Upper Brookville is a village located within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 1,698 at the 2010 census. History The village is named for the brook which once ran along its main road, Wolver Hollow. Although the village is physically lower than the surrounding areas, resident Hope Goddard Iselin opposed the name of Lower Brookville, stating "I refuse to live in lower anything. Oyster Bay High School
Oyster Bay High School is a public high school located in Oyster Bay, New York, United States. The school is a part of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District. As of the 2014-15 school year, the school had an enrollment of 759 students and 69.1 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.0:1. There were 115 students (15.2% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 18 (2.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch. History The present high school building was built to replace the older one, and was completed in 1929. Though this school has been primarily used as a high school it was originally built to house grades K through 12. This imposing brick and stone building with its Art Deco styling, has some interesting details in the original facade, including gargoyle-like eagles and the letters “B” and “G”. Laurel Hollow is a village in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 1,952 at the 2010 census. According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Laurel Hollow was the eighth wealthiest town in America. History The settlement began ''circa'' 1653 with purchase of land from the local natives. Mill Neck
Mill Neck is a village in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. History Mill Neck incorporated as a village in 1925. Many Gold Coast-era estates were constructed in Mill Neck during the Gold Coast era. Mill Neck Village Hall, which also houses the village's branch of the United States Post Office, is located in the former station house of the Mill Neck Long Island Rail Road station. Cove Neck
Cove Neck is a village located within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York. The population was 286 at the 2010 census. History Cove Neck incorporated as a village in 1927. Cove Neck is the site of the home of President Theodore Roosevelt. His estate, Sagamore Hill, is now a museum operated by the National Park Service. It attracts many visitors annually. On January 25, 1990, Avianca Flight 52, a Boeing 707, ran out of fuel before crashing into a hillside in Cove Neck. 73 out of the 158 passengers and crew onboard died in the accident.
