Ovide Alakannuark
Ovide Alakannuark (December 25, 1938 – October 7, 2019) was a Canadian territorial level politician from Pelly Bay, Northwest Territories (now Kugaaruk, Nunavut). He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 1999 until 2004. Alakannuark was elected in the 1999 Nunavut general election. He defeated candidate Steve Mapsalak by just 25 votes to win the Akulliq electoral district. He only served a single term in the Legislature deciding not to run for re-election when it was dissolved in 2004. He attempted a return to politics running in rerun for the Akulliq district finishing a distant third on March 2, 2009. Pelly Bay
Pelly Bay is an Arctic waterway in Kitikmeot Region, Nunavut, Canada. It is located in the Gulf of Boothia. To the east, it is bounded by the Simpson Peninsula. Helen Island lies in the bay. Pelly Bay is named after Sir John Pelly, governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, that managed the British colony of Rupert's Land, that Pelly Bay was located within when it was named. John Ningark
John Ningark (17 March 1944 – 17 November 2016) was a territorial level politician in Nunavut Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Political history Ningark, who was from Repulse Bay, Northwest Territories (now Naujaat, Nunavut), was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in a by-election in 1989 held in the Natilikmiot electoral district. He was returned by acclamation in the 1991 election. Ningark briefly served as Minister of Renewable Resources in 1992 but resigned shortly after being appointed, reportedly because he found the position too stressful. He won re-election to his third term and final term in the 1995 election, defeating future Nunavut MLA Uriash Puqiqnak by less than 30 votes. 1999 Nunavut General Election
The 1999 Nunavut general election was the first general election in the territory and was held on 15 February 1999, to elect the members of the 1st Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Although Nunavut did not become a territory until 1 April 1999 the election was held early to enable the members to assume their duties on that date. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the MLAs. Paul Okalik was chosen to be Premier of Nunavut. Steve Mapsalak
Steve Mapsalak (born March 17, 1957) is a Canadian politician, who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. He first won the Akulliq seat in the 2004 Nunavut election. According to preliminary results, he was narrowly defeated by John Ningark in the 2008 election.
