John Ningark
John Ningark (17 March 1944 – 17 November 2016) was a territorial level politician in Nunavut Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Political history Ningark, who was from Repulse Bay, Northwest Territories (now Naujaat, Nunavut), was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in a by-election in 1989 held in the Natilikmiot electoral district. He was returned by acclamation in the 1991 election. Ningark briefly served as Minister of Renewable Resources in 1992 but resigned shortly after being appointed, reportedly because he found the position too stressful. He won re-election to his third term and final term in the 1995 election, defeating future Nunavut MLA Uriash Puqiqnak by less than 30 votes. Naujaat
Naujaat ( iu, ᓇᐅᔮᑦ, lit=seagulls' nesting place), known until 2 July 2015 as Repulse Bay, is an Inuit hamlet situated on the Arctic Circle. It is located on the shores of Hudson Bay, at the south end of the Melville Peninsula, in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada. Location and wildlife Naujaat is at the north end of Roes Welcome Sound which separates Southampton Island from the mainland. On the east side of Naujaat Frozen Strait leads east to Foxe Channel. The hamlet is located exactly on the Arctic Circle, on the north shore of Naujaat and on the south shore of the Rae Isthmus. Transport to the community is provided primarily by air and by an annual sealift. Naujaat is home to a wide variety of animals including polar bears, caribou, seals, whales, and walrus. Uriash Puqiqnak
Uriash Puqiqnak, CM (born April 15, 1946) is an experienced soapstone carver and former territorial and municipal level politician in Canada. He served as Mayor of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut and was a member of the Nunavut Legislature from 1999 until 2004. Uriash Puqiqnak briefly served as acting speaker in 2000 after Levi Barnabas' resignation. Carving Puqiqnak is a famous soapstone carver, his works are on display all over Canada. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada on July 29, 2005. His work is also featured in ''Keeping our Stories Alive: The Sculpture of Canada's Inuit'' along with the work of Ovilu Tunnillie and Lucy Meeko. 2008 Nunavut General Election
The 2008 Nunavut General Election was held on October 27, 2008, to return members to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The election was contested across 15 of Nunavut's 19 electoral districts under the first past the post system of voting. Due to local circumstances, the election was delayed in two districts, and two districts did not hold elections as their incumbent MLAs faced no opposition and were acclaimed back into office. Ten of the 15 seats went to first-time MLAs, four of whom defeated incumbents. Premier Paul Okalik and Finance Minister Louis Tapardjuk were the only two cabinet ministers to keep their seats. 2004 Nunavut General Election
The 2004 Nunavut general election was held on February 16, 2004, to elect the 19 members of the 2nd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Premier Paul Okalik asked for the five-year-old territory's first parliament to be dissolved on January 16. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the MLAs. There were 11,285 registered voters at the time of the election call.
