Out There (comedy Specials)
''Out There'' is a series of two television comedy specials, broadcast by Comedy Central in 1993 and 1994. The specials centred on performances by openly LGBT and/or gay-friendly comedians, primarily stand-up comedy but also including some sketch comedy. The first special, hosted by Lea DeLaria, aired in December 1993 following its recording in October on National Coming Out Day. Performers appearing in the special included David Drake, Mark Davis, Bob Smith, Melissa Etheridge, Marga Gomez, Ian McKellen, Steve Moore, Kathy Najimy, Phranc, Suzanne Westenhoefer, Bea Arthur and Pomo Afro Homos. Phranc (born Susan Gottlieb; August 28, 1957), is an American singer-songwriter whose career began playing in several bands in the late 1970s Los Angeles punk rock scene. Cybill Lynne Shepherd (born February 18, 1950) is an American actress and former model. Elvira Kurt
Elvira Kurt (born December 9, 1961) is a Canadian comedian, and was the host of the game show '' Spin Off''. She hosted the entertainment satire/talk show ''PopCultured with Elvira Kurt'', which began on The Comedy Network in Canada in 2005. That show's style was similar to ''The Daily Show with Jon Stewart''. It was cancelled due to poor ratings in early 2006. She is of Jewish Hungarian descent. Openly lesbian, she coined the term "fellagirly" to describe herself and other lesbians whose style is a blend of butch and femme, as opposed to strictly one or the other. Her comedic style relies heavily on complaints about celebrity culture, her own appearance, and the effects of aging. Kate Clinton (born November 9, 1947) is an American comedian specializing in political commentary from a gay/lesbian point of view. Early life and education Clinton was born in Buffalo, New York. She was raised in a large Catholic family in the state of New York. She attended Le Moyne College, a small Jesuit liberal arts college in Syracuse, New York and received her master's degree from Colgate University in the Village of Hamilton. Clinton went on to teach high school English for eight years before becoming a comedian. Career She began her stand-up career in 1981 using her lesbianism, Catholicism and current politics for her jokes. Clinton is a self-described "fumerist," or feminist humorist. Amanda Bearse (born August 9, 1958) is an American actress, comedian and director. She starred in the 1985 supernatural horror film ''Fright Night'', and later starred as Marcy Rhoades D'Arcy in the Fox sitcom '' Married... with Children'' (1987-1997). Bearse later began working as television director, directing over 90 episodes of comedy series. Early life Bearse grew up in Winter Park, Florida. After she graduated from Winter Park High School in 1976, her family moved to Atlanta. Pomo Afro Homos (1990–1995), short for postmodern African American homosexuals, was an African-American gay theater troupe founded in San Francisco by choreographer-dancer Djola Bernard Branner, actor Brian Freeman, and singer, dancer, and actor Eric Gupton.
