"Oubao Moin" is a song by Puerto Rican singer/songwriter Roy Brown. The song is based on a poem from Juan Antonio Corretjer. The name means "Island of Blood," or "Island of a mud" which is what the aíno-Kalinagocalled Puerto Rico, though the song is entirely in Spanish. Roy Brown Ramírez (born July 18, 1945 in Orlando, Florida) is a Puerto Rican musician and singer.Liner notes of "Basta Ya... Revolución" (Disco Libre) Early years Brown's father was an American United States Navy, naval officer and his mother a native of Puerto Rican citizenship, Puerto Rico. Brown was raised during turbulent times in the United States. Among the important issues of those days were racism, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Most of these events went on to form an important part in his ideals and his way of thinking. In the late-1960s, Brown enrolled in the University of Puerto Rico. He enjoyed writing poems and while he was a student, he became actively involved in groups against the Vietnam War, poor living conditions, and especially in favor of the independence movement of Puerto Rico. ''Distancias'' is the fifth album from Puerto Rican folk singer Roy Brown. The album was released by Disco Libre in 1977. It is composed of songs based on poems from Juan Antonio Corretjer. Recording ''Distancias'' was recorded at Tony Croatto's home studio in Caimito, San Juan from April to June 1976. The album consists of seven songs, all of them based on poems from Juan Antonio Corretjer, including a second version of "En la vida todo es ir". The album also features contributions from José González and Miguel Cubano. Track listing Cultural impact Roy Brown's adaptations of Corretjer poems have become very popular in Puerto Rico. Some of the songs have been covered by other artists. Nueva Trova
Nueva Trova (, "new trova") is a movement in Cuban music that emerged around 1967/68 after the Cuban Revolution of 1959, and the consequent political and social changes. Nueva Trova has its roots in the traditional trova, but differs from it because its content is, in the widest sense, political. It combines traditional folk music idioms with 'progressive' and often politicized lyrics. It is related to nueva canción in Latin America, especially Chile and Argentina. Some of the Nueva Trova musicians were also influenced by rock and pop of that time. Juan Antonio Corretjer Montes (March 3, 1908 – January 19, 1985) was a Puerto Rican poet, journalist and pro-independence political activist opposing United States rule in Puerto Rico. Early years Corretjer (birth name: Juan Antonio Corretjer Montes) was born in Ciales, Puerto Rico, into a politically active pro-independence family. His parents were Diego Corretjer Hernández and María Brígida Montes González. His father and uncles were involved in the "Ciales Uprising" of August 13, 1898, against the United States occupation. As a lad, he would often accompany his father and uncles to political rallies. He received his primary and secondary education in his hometown. In 1920, when he was only 12 years old, Corretjer wrote his first poem "Canto a Ciales" (I sing to Ciales). In 1924, Corretjer published his first booklet of poems. ''Haciendo Punto en Otro Son'' is a ''Nueva Trova'' band from Puerto Rico, founded in 1975. They recorded fourteen albums and performed in Latin America, the Caribbean and United States. Band members included Tony Croatto, Silverio Pérez, Josy LaTorre, Irvin García, Nano Cabrera, Ivan Gonzalez, Jorge Arce, José Vega Santana, Moncho Diaz, Jose ‘Pache’ Cruz and many others. Luz Esther Benítez Rosado (born July 22, 1942), also known as Lucecita, is a Puerto Rican singer, part of the country's new wave popular music. Born in Bayamon, a large city in Puerto Rico, she participated in amateur radio shows. Benítez's most important career step came in 1969, when she won the ''Festival de la Cancion Latina'' (''Festival of the Latin Song'') in Mexico. She participated with two songs, "Génesis" by G.V. Lloveras and "Energía de mis manos", by M. de Jesús. "Genesis" received the highest points (223) in the festival and Lucecita also won as best dressed performer. Pedro Rivera Toledo's arrangement of Genesis also won as the best arrangement, although the orchestra was conducted by Jose S. Marroquin.
