Osha Gray Davidson
Osha Gray Davidson (born 1954), is an author, free-lance writer, photographer and podcaster. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and grew up in Iowa, studying at the University of Iowa. Davidson is an author of six books of non-fiction and more than a hundred articles on a range of topics. He's currently a contributing writer at ''Yale Climate Connections'' and ''Sierra'' magazine. Davidson covered the environment for ''Rolling Stone'' magazine and blogged on renewable energy at Forbes.com. His freelance work has also appeared in ''InsideClimate News'', ''Grist'', the ''New York Times'', the ''Washington Post'', ''Salon'', ''Mother Jones'' and other publications. Iowa () is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States, bordered by the Mississippi River to the east and the Missouri River and Big Sioux River to the west. Rural Ghetto
The term rural ghetto describes the influx of poverty and neglect in the small towns of Midwestern, South Central United States, Southeastern United States and Northeastern United States. According to an April 1993 review of the book by Fred Magdoff, rural ghettos are often "omitted from most people's conception of poverty." Generally, "rural poverty is less visually dramatic than urban poverty--poorly insulated mobile homes and weather-beaten single family houses look almost quaint compared to urban tenements." Magdoff goes on to point out the reality of poverty in rural areas does not fit a common conception of idyllic farms. Lori Piestewa
Lori Ann Piestewa ( ; December 14, 1979 – March 23, 2003) was a United States Army soldier killed during the Iraq War. A member of the Quartermaster Corps, she died in the same Iraqi attack in which fellow soldiers Shoshana Johnson and Piestewa's friend Jessica Lynch were injured. A member of the Hopi tribe, Piestewa was the first Native Americans in the United States, Native American woman to die in combat while serving in the U.S. military and the first woman in the U.S. military killed in the Iraq War.
