Oscar F. Moore
Oscar Fitzallen Moore (January 27, 1817 – June 24, 1885) was a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from Ohio. Born in Lagrange, Ohio, Moore attended the public schools and Wellsburg Academy, and was graduated from Washington (now Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1836. He studied law. He was Admission to the bar in the United States, admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced practice in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1839. He served as member of the state house of representatives in 1850 and 1851. He served as member of the state senate in 1852 and 1853. Moore was elected as an Opposition Party (Northern U.S.), Opposition Party candidate to the 34th United States Congress, Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855 – March 3, 1857). Whitelaw Reid (October 27, 1837 – December 15, 1912) was an American politician and newspaper editor, as well as the author of ''Ohio in the War'', a popular work of history. After assisting Horace Greeley as editor of the ''New-York Tribune'', Reid purchased the paper after Greeley's death in late 1872 and controlled it until his own death. The circulation grew to about 60,000 a day, but the weekly edition became less important. He invested heavily in new technology, such as the Hoe rotary printing press and the linotype machine, but bitterly fought against the unionized workers for control of his shop. As a famous voice of the Republican Party, he was honored with appointments as ambassador to France and Great Britain, as well as numerous other honorific positions.
