Osanna
Osanna are an Italian progressive rock band. Origin The group originated in the Vomero neighborhood of Naples with the union of Lino Vairetti (voice), Danilo Rustici (guitar), Massimo Guarino (drums), Lello Brandi (bass), from the first line-up of the band Città Frontale, and Elio D'Anna (flute and sax), former member of the Showmen. Osanna were among the first bands in the world to present themselves theatrically in their shows, featuring costumes and made-up faces. Artistic output After the debut album '' L'uomo'', they released the soundtrack for the film ''Milano Calibro 9''. In 1972 they toured in Italy alongside Genesis. Their following album ''Palepoli'' (1972) is regarded as one of the finest hours of the Italian progressive rock movement, characterized by a wild composition fantasy which mixes Neapolitan and Mediterranean sounds with modern progressive rock elements, such as the extensive use of electric guitar and mellotron. ''Caliber 9'' ( it, Milano calibro 9, lit=Milan caliber 9; also released as ''The Contract'') is a 1972 Italian noir-poliziottesco film written and directed by Fernando Di Leo and starring Gastone Moschin, Mario Adorf, Barbara Bouchet, Philippe Leroy, Frank Wolff, Luigi Pistilli, and Lionel Stander. The film takes its title from the short story collection of the same name by Giorgio Scerbanenco, and is partially based on three of its stories. Nova (Italian Band)
Nova was an Italian progressive rock band that was formed in 1975 from members of the bands Osanna and Cervello. Based in London for most of their career, they released four albums that were influenced by the 1970s jazz fusion styles of bands such as Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and Return to Forever. History The band was formed when the founder members of Osanna, Elio D'Anna (saxophone and flute) and Danilo Rustici (guitar) were joined by Danilos’ 17-year-old brother, Corrado Rustici (guitar and vocals) from Cervello. Cervello
Cervello ("Brain") is a band from Italy. History Cervello was formed by musicians from Naples. Corrado Rustici, then 17 years old, was the younger brother of Danilo Rustici, who was the guitarist of another popular rock band from Naples of these years, the Osanna. In 1973 the band released their sole album ''Melos'', a brilliant Italian symphonic progressive rock production. The band show good mastery of their instruments, dazzling in sometimes over-complicated passages. Flutes and saxophones are often used to replace the keyboards and mellotron of many progressive works from this era. In spite of critical praise the band broke up in 1974. Corrado Rustici, after a brief stint with the Osanna, and a lengthy tenure with Nova, started a successful career as a solo musician and producer. David Nicholas George Jackson (born 15 April 1947), nicknamed Jaxon, is an English progressive rock saxophonist, flautist, and composer. He is best known for his work with the band Van der Graaf Generator and his work in Music and Disability. He has also worked with Peter Gabriel, Keith Tippett, Osanna, Judge Smith, David Cross and others. Van der Graaf Generator Jackson was a member of the English progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator for most of the 1970s and for their 2005 reunion tour. His speciality was then electric saxophones, using octave devices, wah-wah and powerful amplification. Style His saxophone-playing is characterized by the frequent use of double horns, playing two saxophones at the same time, a style he copied from Rahsaan Roland Kirk (whose style and technique influenced Jackson). Il Rovescio della Medaglia, or RDM, were an Italian hard rock and symphonic rock band. They are most famous for their symphonic rock piece '' Contaminazione'', released in 1973. It contained four pieces from Bach's ''Well-tempered Clavier'' seamlessly integrated with RDM's own music, which often was inspired by rock or hard rock. In 1974 the record was released in an English version, ''Contamination'', with the group's name simplified to RDM, although still written in full on the back of the LP jacket. The band was produced by Luis Enríquez Bacalov. The band split up in 1977, but reformed in 1993. Le Orme (Italian: "The Footprints") is an Italian progressive rock band formed in 1966 in Marghera, a ''frazione'' of Venice. The band was one of the major groups of the Italian progressive rock scene in the 1970s. They are one of few Italian rock bands to have success outside their own country, having played concerts across North America and Europe, and releasing an album in English at the height of their success. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (English: ''Bank of Mutual Relief'') is an Italian rock band. A popular progressive rock band in the 1970s, they continued making music in the 1980s and 1990s. Recently, they were still active, playing live in 2001 and 2008 at NEARfest. Their charismatic frontman, Francesco Di Giacomo, died in 2014. History Inspired by progressive rock acts from England, in particular Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, keyboardists Vittorio Nocenzi and his brother Gianni founded Banco del Mutuo Soccorso in Rome, Italy. David Cross (musician)
David Cross (born 23 April 1949 in Turnchapel near Plymouth, England) is an English electric violinist and keyboardist best known for playing with progressive rock band King Crimson from 1972 to 1974. He appears on their studio albums ''Larks' Tongues in Aspic,'' '' Starless and Bible Black'', and a single track on ''Red''. Cross also appears on numerous other live recordings from 1973 & 1974 that have been released by Robert Fripp's Discipline Global Mobile label in the decades since, including ''USA'' (1975) and ''The Night Watch'' (1997).'' After his time with King Crimson, Cross travelled extensively, eventually returning to music through work in the theatre. In 1987 he formed an ensemble called Low Flying Aircraft with Keith Tippett on piano. In 1988, he was invited by keyboardist Geoff Serle to join Radius, with whom he has recorded five studio albums.
