Organised Independents
The Organised Independents (often abbreviated to OIs) are a grouping within the National Union of Students of the United Kingdom. The group is made up of candidates for National Executive Committee posts, all standing on an "independent" label, and their supporters. As such, the OIs have been defined as an interest group as opposed to a faction; this originates from the idea that they are apolitical or moderate, either simply as a group of sabbatical officers seeking to support one another, or as proponents of a membership-focused national ideology. Commentator Rachel Brooks writes that the OIs also have a "shared concern to minimise the influence of 'the left'," which she defines as centring around the factions AWL, Liberation Left, and NCAFC. Ideology While individual OIs have a broad range of political views and positions, from soft left to one-nation conservatism, the group as a whole holds a membership-focused ideology. Liberation Left
Liberation Left (formerly Student Broad Left or SBL) is a factional grouping operating within the National Union of Students of the United Kingdom. The group was formed in 1997 as a split from the Campaign for Free Education (CFE) and first contested NUS elections in 1998. It is characterised by its vocal support for the NUS Liberation Campaigns, Palestinian rights and for free-to-student, state-funded education, and its determined opposition to racism, Islamophobia, fascism, and war. The group describes itself as a "network of left activists campaigning for a progressive student movement", and has Labour, Green, and independent members. Today, the group has members in Labour parliamentary candidacies and its National Executive Committee. Labour Party (UK)
The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The Labour Party sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum. In all general elections since 1922, Labour has been either the governing party or the Official Opposition. Aaron Ross Porter (born 11 January 1985) is a former president of the National Union of Students in the United Kingdom; he was elected with a 65% majority and took office in June 2010 for one year. Background and positions held In 2010, Porter lived with his parents in Norbury, south London. His father is a policeman who grew up in London and his mother is a teacher from Trinidad. Gemma Tumelty
Gemma Tumelty (born 20 October 1980), is a British Labour Party and Trades Union activist, who was President of the National Union of Students (NUS) from 2006 to 2008. She was the NUS National Secretary from 2005 to 2006, and a member of its National Executive Committee for two years before that. Early life Tumelty was born in Weston-Super-Mare, and grew up in Burnham on Sea. Raised in a single parent family, she was educated in Cheddar. The family moved to Hertfordshire during her later teens, but returned to Somerset once Gemma and her older sister went to university. Tumelty graduated in psychology from Liverpool John Moores University in 2005. NUS President Tumelty was previously Women's Officer and then Vice President Welfare in Liverpool Students' Union. Kat Fletcher
Kathryn "Kat" Jane Fletcher (born 20 December 1979) is a British Labour Party politician. In May 2016, she was sworn in as the Mayor of Islington, having served as a councillor of the borough's St George's Ward since 2013. She was previously president of the National Union of Students, between 2004 and 2006, the first to be elected from a political slate to the left of Labour Students. The London Borough of Islington ( ) is a London borough in Inner London. Whilst the majority of the district is located in north London, the borough also includes a significant area to the south which forms part of central London. Mandy Telford (born 5 June 1976) is the former List of presidents of the National Union of Students (United Kingdom), President of National Union of Students (United Kingdom), National Union of Students from 2002 to 2004, having served the previous two years as President of National Union of Students Scotland, NUS Scotland. She was the fifth woman to hold the NUS presidency and was twice elected as the Labour Students candidate. Owain James is the Director of the Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation in London. He was previously Director of External Relations for the International Planned Parenthood Federation. People's Vote was a United Kingdom campaign group that unsuccessfully campaigned for a second referendum following the UK's Brexit vote to leave the European Union (EU) in 2016. The group was launched in April 2018 at which four Members of Parliament spoke, along with the actor Patrick Stewart and other public figures. In October 2019, there was a power struggle within the group. After the Conservative Party achieved an overall majority in the 2019 general election, the group announced that it would rebrand in 2020 to push for a fair deal following the UK's exit from the EU in January 2020. For our Future's Sake (FFS) was a student-led pressure group supporting a referendum on the Brexit withdrawal agreement. It represented at least 60 Students’ Unions, and 980,000 students, across the UK. Background FFS was launched at the National Union of Students' National Conference in 2018. Incumbent Deputy President Amatey Doku called for 'nationwide student-led mobilization to demand a people's vote' during his re-election speech, and delegates passed policy to 'campaign for a second referendum on the deal negotiated'. In May 2018, the campaign launched its statement of intent in an open letter undersigned by 120 student leaders. The letter was featured in several British newspapers, and FFS spokespeople pledged a 'summer of action' involving demonstrations across the UK.
