The Oregon chub (''Oregonichthys crameri'') is a species of ray-finned fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is endemic to Oregon in the United States. From 1993 to 2015 it was a federally listed threatened species. This chub is native to the drainage of the Willamette River in Oregon. It was once distributed throughout the drainage in shallow water habitat, but changes in the hydrology of the region have eliminated much of this habitat and restricted the chub to several streams and rivers. Introduction The Umpqua chub (''Oregonichthys kalawatseti'') is a species of freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is found only in the Umpqua River and partially in its tributaries ( North Umpqua, South Umpqua, Smith River, Calapooya, Cow Creek, and Ollala Creek), Oregon in the United States, making it an endemic species to that watershed. While geographic populations are split into six regions, genetic studies suggest that there are four genetically distinct populations: Smith River, Elk Creek, Calapooya Creek-Olalla Creek, and Cow Creek-South Umpqua River. Ecology Umpqua chub generally inhabit slower moving waters. When found in faster waters, they typically reside close to banks in small pools and side-channels under riparian vegetation. Cyprinidae is a family of freshwater fish commonly called the carp or minnow family. It includes the carps, the true minnows, and relatives like the barbs and barbels. Cyprinidae is the largest and most diverse fish family and the largest vertebrate animal family in general with about 3,000 species, of which only 1,270 remain extant, divided into about 370 genera. Carl Leavitt Hubbs (October 19, 1894 – June 30, 1979) was an American ichthyologist. Biography Youth He was born in Williams, Arizona. He was the son of Charles Leavitt and Elizabeth (née Goss) Hubbs. His father had a wide variety of jobs (farmer, iron mine owner, newspaper owner). The family moved several times before settling in San Diego where he got his first taste of natural history. After his parents divorced in 1907, he lived with his mother, who opened a private school in Redondo Beach, California. His maternal grandmother Jane Goble Goss, one of the first female doctors, showed Hubbs how to harvest shellfish and other sea creatures. John Otterbein Snyder (August 14, 1867 – August 19, 1943) was an American ichthyologist and professor of zoology at Stanford University. History As a student he met David Starr Jordan who inspired him to enter zoology. He eventually became a zoology instructor at Stanford University and served there from 1899 until 1943. He went on several major collecting expeditions aboard the in the early 1900s and organized the U.S. National Museum's fish collection in 1925. The same year he also declined the directorship there so he could return to Stanford. He was a long-term member of the California Academy of Sciences and worked for the California Bureau of Fisheries.
