Oregon World War II Memorial
The Oregon World War II Memorial to Oregon veterans of World War II, is located the grounds of the Oregon State Capitol, in Salem, Oregon, United States. Nine memorial plaques recount the stories of action of Oregon Army, Marines, Navy, Air Corps, National Guard, and civilians. A memorial wall records the names of those killed in action. A granite pavement featuring an inscribed world map, with stars indicating the theaters of war where Oregon soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen served, surrounding an obelisk which is blank and unadorned. It was dedicated on June 6, 2014. Oregon State Capitol
The Oregon State Capitol is the building housing the state legislature and the offices of the governor, secretary of state, and treasurer of the U.S. state of Oregon. It is located in the state capitol, Salem. Constructed from 1936 to 1938 and expanded in 1977, the current building is the third to house the Oregon state government in Salem. The first two capitols in Salem were destroyed by fire, one in 1855 and the other in 1935. New York architects Trowbridge & Livingston conceived the current structure's Art Deco stripped classical design in association with Francis Keally. Much of the interior and exterior is made of marble. The Oregon State Capitol was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 29, 1988. Claire Phillips
Claire Maybelle Snyder (December 2, 1907 – May 22, 1960), also known as Clara Fuentes, Clara Phillips, Dorothy Fuentes as well as High Pockets, was an American spy, entertainer, club owner, and writer most noted for her exploits in the Japanese-occupied Philippines. She was portrayed by Ann Dvorak in the 1951 movie ''I Was an American Spy''. She was also the author of ''Manila Espionage'', a book about her wartime experiences. In 1951, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom. Many of Phillips' statements and claims about spying were later determined to be "without foundation," although in 1957 she was awarded $1,349.21 by the United States Court of Claims in compensation for assistance she had provided to American prisoners of war and Filipino resistance movements. The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon responsible for programs and benefits for citizens of the state who are veterans of the U.S. armed services, their dependents and survivors. Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Oregon)
Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Portland VA) is a 160-bed, acute care medical facility opened in 1929 by the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, located on Marquam Hill in Portland, adjacent to Oregon Health & Sciences University, and is connected to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital via a skybridge. The original hospital was replaced in the 1980s and had a capacity of up-to 478 beds. History The University of Oregon Medical School's regents (now Oregon Health & Science University) donated land on Marquam Hill in 1926 to what is now the Department of Veterans Affairs. The property was to be used to construct a veterans hospital, with construction starting in February 1928.
