Oregon Route 237 is an Oregon state highway running from OR 82 in Island City to Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 30 in North Powder. OR 237 is composed of the Cove Highway No. 342 (see Oregon highways and routes) and part of the La Grande-Baker Highway No. 66. It is a combined long and runs generally northwest to southeast in an inverted L pattern. Route description OR 237 begins at an intersection with OR 82 in Island City. It heads east to Cove, where it turns south, then west, then south again to Union, where it overlaps OR 203 for . After the concurrency ends, OR 237 continues south to an intersection with I-84 and US 30 in North Powder, where it ends. North Powder, Oregon
North Powder is a city in Union County, Oregon, United States. The population was 439 at the 2010 census. History North Powder was platted in 1885 or 1886 along the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company rail line, having been a stage stop before then. David Eccles, a Mormon businessman, created the Hall Brothers Lumber Company in the town once the railway arrived. North Powder prospered because it had an icehouse that supplied the refrigerator cars of Pacific Fruit Express until the icehouse burned down in the 1930s. Union, Oregon
Union is a city in Union County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,121 at the 2010 census. Union is the namesake of Union County. History Union was platted on November 11, 1864 along the Oregon Trail. The name references the Union states, or Northern States, of the American Civil War. La Grande was named the county seat when Union County was created in 1865. Due to the Thomas and Ruckle Road going through Union, it elected the county seat in 1872, but when the railroad was built it was put through La Grande instead of Union. La Grande became the bigger town within the county and regained the county seat in 1902. J. W. Shelton, a local attorney, chartered the Union Electric Power and Light Company in March 1890 to bring the railroad from Union Junction (2.5 miles away) to Union itself. Island City, Oregon
Island City is a city in Union County, Oregon, United States. Its name originated from the city's location on an island between the Grande Ronde River and a nearby slough. However, the slough was later diverted, removing the city's island status. The population was 989 at the 2010 census. Community A Boise Cascade particle board plant existed near Island City. The Lighthouse Pentecostal Church is located in Island City, and was the site of a community COVID-19 outbreak over the weekend of June 13–14, 2020. By June 16 there were 236 cases linked to the church due to a wedding that weekend. Oregon Route 82 (OR 82) is a state highway in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Oregon. Interstate 84 (I-84) in the U.S. state of Oregon is a major Interstate Highway that traverses the state from west to east. In the U.S. state of Oregon, U.S. Route 30, a major east–west U.S. Highway, runs from its western terminus in Astoria to the Idaho border east of Ontario. Cove, Oregon
Cove is a city in Union County, Oregon, United States. The population was 620 at the 2020 census. History This area was well known to the Cayuse and Nez Perce Tribes who referred to it as Wiweeletitpe (wee-walla-tit-puh), meaning "Many creeks flowing at that place". Euro-Americans first settled here in 1862, and in 1863 they established a post office named ''Forest Cove''. Samuel G. French was the first postmaster. To avoid confusion between Forest Cove and another Oregon community, Forest Grove in Washington County, post office authorities changed the name to ''Cove'' in 1868. Cove was platted in the 1870s along Ruckles Road, only the second road over the Blue Mountains.
