Oregon Department Of Veterans' Affairs
The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon responsible for programs and benefits for citizens of the state who are veterans of the U.S. armed services, their dependents and survivors. The agency was created in 1945 by the Oregon Legislative Assembly in response to popular citizen support for provide benefits and services to Oregon soldiers, sailors and airmen returning from World War II. Since then, the scope of the department's responsibilities have been expanded to include a wider range of services to veterans of all eras, and their families. The government of the U.S. state of Oregon, as prescribed by the Oregon Constitution, is composed of three government branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. These branches operate in a manner similar to that of the federal government of the United States. Oregon Legislative Assembly
The Oregon Legislative Assembly is the state legislature for the U.S. state of Oregon. The Legislative Assembly is bicameral, consisting of an upper and lower house: the Senate, whose 30 members are elected to serve four-year terms; and the House of Representatives, with 60 members elected to two-year terms. There are no term limits for either house in the Legislative Assembly. Each Senate district is composed of exactly two House districts: Senate District 1 contains House Districts 1 and 2, SD 2 contains HD 3 and HD 4, and so on. Oregon World War II Memorial
The Oregon World War II Memorial to Oregon veterans of World War II, is located the grounds of the Oregon State Capitol, in Salem, Oregon, United States. Nine memorial plaques recount the stories of action of Oregon Army, Marines, Navy, Air Corps, National Guard, and civilians. A memorial wall records the names of those killed in action. A granite pavement featuring an inscribed world map, with stars indicating the theaters of war where Oregon soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen served, surrounding an obelisk which is blank and unadorned. Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Oregon)
Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Portland VA) is a 160-bed, acute care medical facility opened in 1929 by the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, located on Marquam Hill in Portland, adjacent to Oregon Health & Sciences University, and is connected to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital via a skybridge. The original hospital was replaced in the 1980s and had a capacity of up-to 478 beds. History The University of Oregon Medical School's regents (now Oregon Health & Science University) donated land on Marquam Hill in 1926 to what is now the Department of Veterans Affairs. The property was to be used to construct a veterans hospital, with construction starting in February 1928. Offices opened at the new facility in November 1928, and patients were transferred to the new hospital in December 1928. Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a public research university focusing primarily on health sciences with a main campus, including two hospitals, in Portland, Oregon. The institution was founded in 1887 as the University of Oregon Medical Department and later became the University of Oregon Medical School. In 1974, the campus became an independent, self-governed institution called the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, combining state dentistry, medicine, nursing, and public health programs into a single center.
