The system of orders, decorations, and medals of Timor-Leste was initially established with the passage of The Statute of the National Liberation Combatants in 2006. Under Article 26 of this statute was established a system to recognize the contributions of those who actively participated in the liberation of Timor-Leste. In March 2009, additional medals were established to honor those who, "have served the nation of East Timor by reinforcing the social order and whose actions have contributed significantly to national peace and stability." Finally, in May 2009, the Order of Timor-Leste was established as the highest currently awarded distinction of Timor-Leste. Order Of Timor-Leste
The Order of Timor-Leste ( pt, Ordem de Timor-Leste) is the highest honour currently awarded by East Timor. Established in 2009, the order was created after the original honours granted by East Timor. It is of a more general and broader nature than the original orders related to East Timor's independence. The order recognises the contributions of East Timorese and foreign nationals who have made a significant contribution to East Timor, the Timorese or Mankind in general. The Medal of Merit ( pt, Medalha de Mérito) is a state decoration of East Timor. Established in 2009, it may be awarded to East Timorese and foreign civilian and military personnel. Criteria and award procedure The Medal of Merit recognizes civilians and military personnel, both East Timorese and foreign citizens, who have made significant contributions to national peace and stability. Timor Leste Solidarity Medal
The Timor-Leste Solidarity Medal ( pt, Medalha Solidariedade de Timor-Leste) is a state decoration of East Timor awarded to international security forces for their contribution to stability and peace operations in East Timor during the INTERFET operation, and following the 2006 East Timorese crisis. Criteria Personnel may be awarded the medal if they meet personnel and time qualifications. Personnel eligible are military or police personnel who have served on a mandated mission assisting with peace and stability operations. Military or Police personnel may also be eligible if they were posted to a recognised bilateral support mission to East Timor.
