Order Of The Disa
The Order of the Disa (plant), Disa is a provincial-level order issued by the Department of the Premier of Western Cape Province. It was created by the Provincial Honours Act 9 of 1999, and is enshrined in Section 6 (1) of the Western Cape Provincial Constitution. It is awarded in the following three levels: * ''Commander'': for rendering excellent meritorious service * ''Officer'': for rendering outstanding meritorious service * ''Member'': for rendering noteworthy meritorious service. It was first awarded in 2003 by then-premier Marthinus van Schalkwyk at Castle of Good Hope, and has been awarded intermittently ever since. ''Disa'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Orchidaceae. It comprises about 182 species. Leonora van den Heever (born 9 July 1926) is a former judge of the High Court of South Africa. She is South Africa's first female judge and the first woman to be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa. Early life and education Van den Heever was born in Windhoek, the daughter of Toon van den Heever and Margaretha van den Heever (née Rautenbach). She attended the C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje in Bloemfontein, after which she completed her tertiary studies at the University of Pretoria, where she obtained, cum laude, her BA degree in English and Latin followed by a MA degree, cum laude, in English. Njongonkulu Winston Hugh Ndungane (born 2 April 1941) is a retired South African Anglican bishop and a former prisoner on Robben Island. He was the Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman and Archbishop of Cape Town. Early life Ndungane was born in Kokstad. He attended Lovedale High School, Alice, Eastern Cape and completed his schooling there in December 1958. Cheryl Carolus (born 27 May 1958) is a South African politician. She was born in Silvertown, on the Cape Flats, Cape Town. Carolus became involved in politics while still at school and became an activist after joining the United Democratic Front in 1983. Hilda Bernstein
Hilda Bernstein (15 May 1915 – 8 September 2006) was a British-born author, artist, and an activist against apartheid and for women's rights. She was born Hilda Schwarz in London, England, and emigrated to South Africa at the age of 18 years, becoming active in politics. She married fellow activist Lionel "Rusty" Bernstein in March 1941, and together they played prominent roles in the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. After her husband was tried and acquitted in the Rivonia Trial in 1964, government harassment forced them to flee to Botswana, an ordeal described in her 1967 book '' The World that was Ours'', which was republished by Persephone Books in 2004. They lived in Britain for some years where she further established herself internationally as a speaker, writer, and artist.
